Responsibilities include daily sonographic laboratory operations, equipment maintenance and performance, and continuous quality assessment of imaging services. The Perinatal Sonographer upholds strict adherence to Howard University FPP Privacy Policies as well as all applicable federal and state regulations governing healthcare practice and employment.**ESSENTIAL DUTIES*** Perform all requested sonographic examinations as ordered by the attending physician. Acquire and analyze data obtained using ultrasound and related diagnostic technologies. Meet examination components as defined by Maternal-Fetal Medicine Division, department procedures, established protocols, and AIUM’s examination guidelines.* Greet patients and guests, explain ultrasound procedures, prepare patients for appropriate examination according to department policies. Support patients and their families in a compassionate manner.* Verify accuracy of ultrasound requisition by checking physician orders.* Interview patients to gather history pertinent to the ultrasound examination.* Use independent judgment and systematic problem-solving methods to produce high quality diagnostic information and optimize patient care.* Conduct fetal exams including 1st trimester ultrasound, nuchal translucency measurement, 2nd trimester basic and detailed anatomic survey, 3rd trimester ultrasound, limited examinations, follow up examinations, transvaginal examinations, and biophysical profiles.* Assist perinatologists in invasive procedures such as amniocentesis.* Provide summary findings to the physician to aid patient diagnosis and management. Prepare accurate and comprehensive preliminary reports on the Viewpoint system.* Collaborate closely with maternal-fetal medicine physicians, genetic counselors, nurses, and referring providers to ensure comprehensive care.* Perform portable examinations as requested.* Maintain equipment as instructed. Report equipment failures to the Lead Sonographer.* Perform daily pre-visit planning and assign related clerical duties as required.* Work in accordance with FPP and department policies regarding documentation and billing for ultrasound services.* Responsible for room preparation, stocking, clean-up, and equipment sterilization.* Assume responsibility for the safety and well-being of all patients in the sonographic area/department. Monitor, observe and recognize any abnormal changes in patients’ conditions and respond appropriately to emergencies with adequate handoff as needed. Obtaining assistance from physicians and other appropriate staff as needed.* Escort patients to a consultation room or waiting area upon completion of sonographic examination.* Coordinate with other staff to ensure appropriate patient care is provided.* Protect Personal Health Information (PHI) and maintaining compliance with Howard University FPP Privacy Policy. Use the minimum PHI necessary when completing assignments.* Adhere to infection control, safety procedures, and HIPAA compliance.* Promote, establish, and maintain open and effective communication with all members of FPP. Serves as a communication liaison between the physician and the patient.* Participate in continuing education and demonstrate critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.* Receive, organize, prioritize, store, and maintain transmittable information utilizing electronic technology.* Perform other duties as defined by management or physicians.**EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE*** Require successful completion of an approved curriculum in diagnostic medical sonography or equivalent educational background.* Current registration (or Registry-eligible) by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) in Obstetrics and Gynecology.* Prefer one-year prior OB experience or recent internship in obstetrics or MFM clinic. New graduates are welcome to apply.* Basic Life Support and CPR certification are preferred.* Nuchal translucency certification through NTQR or Fetal Maternal Foundation. The ability to obtain certification within 6 months of employment is required if not currently certified.**COMPETENCIES*** Exceptional organizational and time management skills to ensure maximum productivity and efficiency.* Exceptional verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.* Ability to work with limited supervision while performing duties.* Meet national matrix standards to ensure the provision of high-quality patient care and diagnostic imaging services.**WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS**This job is operated in a professional medical office environment. Requires the ability to work in a fast-paced environment under pressure and with a diverse population including staff, physicians, patients, family, and other members of the public on a regular basis. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
