The successful Feedyard Veterinary Technician is an ambitious, skilled veterinary technician who can function within a fast paced, demanding work schedule. Veterinary Technicians work closely with the Feedyard Staff, Veterinarian, and the Cattle Manager to identify and treat sick and injured animals. In addition, Veterinary Technicians will be responsible for the training and development of feedyard doctoring crews on various health care practices and procedures.
Successful applicants are self-motivated, team oriented, and possess the ability to multi-task in a diverse and fast paced environment.
Must be willing to relocate to one of our yard locations within Texas or Kansas. Roles and Tasks
Assisting the doctors and pen riders with identification and treatment of sick and injured animals
Management of treatment records for sick and injured animals
Work in conjunction with the company veterinarian to train feedyard doctors on surgical techniques
Perform, instruct, and oversee post-mortem examinations (necropsies)
Monitoring animal health and well-being practices
Providing training to cowboys and doctors on animal handling best practices
Maintaining records on Beef Quality Assurance certification of all personnel
Assisting the Head Doctor and Cattle Manager with record‑keeping of animal treatment history and medicine and vaccine inventories
Assist in restraining animals for procedures and treatments
Performing laboratory procedures, medicating patients, monitoring critical patients, preparing medications, stocking supplies, and other essential duties
Assisting the Staff Veterinarian and the Cattle Manager with development and maintenance of animal health metrics and periodic reports
Perform and assist with oversight of timely maintenance of all cattle care facilities
Assist with cattle sorting and classification
Assist the Staff Veterinarian, Head Doctor and Cattle Manager with any duties directly related to animal health and well‑being
The Employer retains the right to change or assign other duties to this position
Education Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Medicine, Animal Science, or a related field
Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT or RVT)
Bovine veterinary skills required
Specific Knowledge:
Animal disease prevention and control
Understanding of the modes of action of antimicrobials, anthelmintics, and anaesthetics
Knowledge of post‑mortem examination and diagnosis
IT/Technical Knowledge:
Microsoft Excel
Microsoft Word
General computer knowledge
Special Conditions / Requirements
Must be fluent in English and Spanish, as determined by the Staff Veterinarian
Must be able to lift up to 100 lbs. regularly
Must be eligible to obtain a Texas driver’s license
Must be able to legally operate a Class C motor vehicle less than 26,001 lbs gross weight with or without towing a trailer not to exceed 10,000 lbs GVWR or a farm trailer with a GVWR that does not exceed 20,000 lbs
Detail oriented to provide accurate and consistent work
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Ability to perform mathematical computations such as percentages, fractions, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division quickly and accurately
Work independently and as a team member
Heavy lifting, walking, long‑term standing, climbing on and off equipment
Subject to seasonal weather conditions
May require working alternate shifts, holidays, weekends, or “on‑call‑duty” to ensure hospital operations are sufficient
Must be able to properly deal with Livestock accidents, moving machinery, contaminated medical equipment, vehicular and livestock traffic
