Business Analyst Commercial Underwriting

Job Summary We are seeking a Specialty Lines Business Analyst with strong Commercial Underwriting domain expertise to partner closely with underwriting teams. This role focuses on eliciting, analyzing, and documenting business requirements that support underwriting workflows, systems, and regulatory needs. The ideal candidate will translate complex underwriting processes into clear, structured Business Requirements Documents (BRDs) for technology and delivery teams. Key Responsibilities Partner with Commercial Underwriters and leadership to understand current and future underwriting processes across: Habitational General Liability (GL) Management Liability Excess (XS) Casualty Lead requirements elicitation through interviews, workshops, and working sessions. Business objectives, scope, and assumptions Functional and non-functional requirements Data requirements, business rules, and underwriting decision logic Regulatory and compliance considerations Translate underwriting workflows and risk assessment needs into structured requirements for technology teams. Maintain end-to-end requirements traceability throughout the delivery lifecycle. Act as liaison between underwriting and IT/delivery teams to ensure alignment. Support solution design reviews and validate solutions against underwriting requirements. Participate in UAT planning and execution. Identify process gaps and opportunities for workflow optimization and automation. Manage requirement changes and communicate impacts to stakeholders. Required Qualifications
Minimum 5+ years of experience as a Business Analyst, preferably in insurance or financial services. Minimum 3+ years supporting Commercial Underwriting teams. Proven experience authoring detailed BRDs for underwriting or system transformation initiatives. Strong understanding of Commercial Lines underwriting, including: Risk assessment and appetite Rating and pricing concepts Underwriting rules and decision frameworks Experience with underwriting system implementations or modernization programs. Excellent written, verbal, and stakeholder facilitation skills. Ability to work independently and directly with underwriting stakeholders. Preferred Qualifications
Experience with underwriting platforms or PAS solutions (e.g., Federato, Duck Creek). Familiarity with Agile and/or Waterfall delivery environments. Business Analysis certifications (CBAP, CCBA, or equivalent). Exposure to underwriting transformation, workflow automation, or digital modernization initiatives. Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Information Systems, or equivalent professional experience. Travel
Minimal to moderate travel may be required based on project needs.
