Overview:
As senior biologist, you will lead wildlife resource assessment and management, independently conduct inventory and monitor work, track population changes, and collaborate closely with partners to support game and non-game wildlife populations. You will supervise staff and volunteers, serve as a key point of contact for the public, Tribes, and agencies on wildlife issues, and shape recommendations for wildlife management, conservation, recreation, and tribal co-management harvest agreements.
Responsibilities
Inventory and monitor diverse wildlife populations through state‑wide surveys, field surveys for game and non‑game species, data collection, population size estimation, disease monitoring, and statistical analysis.
Measure population changes: evaluate trends, compile and analyze data, prepare written reports.
Develop recommendations for wildlife‑related recreation opportunities and hunting regulations.
Supervise staff: assign and direct work, lead teams, ensure deadlines met.
Implement actions advancing species recovery and management: population augmentation, capture, translocation activities, recommend management/recovery actions.
Provide input on wildlife habitat management and conservation: evaluate habitat quality, recommend restoration actions, provide input on habitat‑altering actions.
Engage and communicate with public, government, tribal, and N‑G partners: present data, verbally and in writing.
Work with private lands: facilitate recreational access, coordinate with Wildlife Conflict Specialists to establish hunting seasons and permit levels.
Working conditions: office and extensive field settings, operating equipment, watercraft, aerial surveys, hiking, inclement weather, heavy gear.
Schedule: full‑time 40 hours per week, occasional evening/weekend hours.
Travel: regular within district, occasional out‑of‑state.
Tools and equipment: field necropsy instruments, GIS, mapping, technical monitoring equipment, vehicles, boats, snowmobiles, ATVs, firearms, dart guns, traps.
Customer interactions: frequent interactions with public, tribal partners, government and N‑G organizations.
Qualifications
Option 1: Bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Management, Biology, Ecology, or closely related field AND five (5) years of professional experience in wildlife management or research.
Option 2: Four (4) years of experience as a Fish & Wildlife Biologist 3.
One (1) year of experience trapping, handling, dispatching, immobilizing wildlife.
One (1) year of leadership or supervisory experience (conflict resolution, training, planning, evaluating performance).
Four (4) years of experience with wildlife population ecology, species relationships, game and nongame species.
Four (4) years of experience designing or assisting with wildlife surveys and field sampling methods.
Four (4) years of experience with wildlife harvest management principles, practices, and implementation.
Further notes: Education can be substituted with experience; Master’s degree may substitute 1 year experience; PhD may substitute 2 years experience.
Certifications / Licenses Valid driver’s license.
Special Requirements / Conditions of Employment
Background check, drug screening, firearm authorization, animal euthanasia training.
Firearm possession and use required; maintain eligibility per agency policy.
Certification to participate in aerial flight surveys and motorboat operation within 12 months.
Obtain and maintain license to handle and administer animal capture and immobilization drugs per applicable regulations.
Preferred Qualifications
Four (4) Years of professional experience in wildlife habitat relationships, species identification, communication, field surveys, data analysis, management tools.
Two (2) Years of experience in environmental rules, wildlife damage management, complex field projects, procedures, objectives, urban wildlife, necropsy, training, negotiation, GIS.
