DHS hospitals are training sites for physicians completing Graduate Medical Education, and also operate an EMS agency and the County’s 911 emergency response system, Housing for Health, and the Office of Diversion and Re‑entry.

Definition Provides support in obtaining, verifying, and assessing the qualifications of physician and allied health professionals to provide patient care services.
Classification Standards Responsible for collecting, reviewing, monitoring, and updating credentialing documentation for existing and new medical providers. Incumbents must perform under general supervision and follow department and regulatory policies to evaluate licensure, education, training, experience, and active hospital affiliations, ensuring proper qualifications and privileges. A one‑year probationary period is required.
Essential Job Functions
Receives and processes applications for credentialing and privileging from licensed independent practitioners and allied health professionals applying for membership in the Professional Staff Association (PSA).
Notifies department chairs and applicants of their status and time‑frames for completion.
Reviews applications for required documentation; verifies credentials, education, employment history, licensure, professional references, hospital affiliations, and liability claims history by performing online queries from resources such as the National Practitioner Data Bank, AMA, DEA, and OIG.
Ensures physicians, allied health professionals, and other practitioners are properly licensed, trained, and certified in accordance with state and federal regulations.
Reviews requested privileges to verify appropriate criteria and training documentation.
Monitors provisional applications for completion of proctoring and notifies the respective department chair and provisional members of status and time‑frames.
Prepares summary reports of each application for evaluation by the Credentials and Medical Executive Committees; identifies potential adverse information.
Maintains application and credentialing files confidentially; enters credentialing data into the database ensuring currency of information and disseminates data to authorized personnel.
Prepares reports or files for periodic audits by Consolidated Accreditation and Licensure Survey and Office of Managed Care; conducts internal reviews and completes required tasks.
Generates letters to hospital affiliations and other agencies to obtain practitioner competency information; responds to inquiries from other agencies requesting employment verification.
Prepares committee reports on a periodic basis.
Participates in the development and implementation of credentialing processes and procedures.
Requirements
Training And Experience:
Three (3) years of recent, full‑time experience in a Medical Staff Services office at the level of the Los Angeles County class of Intermediate Typist Clerk or higher. Recent experience is considered within the last five (5) years; full‑time experience is 40 hours per week.
License:
Valid California Class C driver license or alternative transportation method available to perform essential functions.
Certification:
Successful certification as a Certified Provider Credentialing Specialist issued by the National Association of Medical Staff Services (required before final appointment).
Physical Class:
Light (2) – Light physical effort including occasional light lifting up to 10 lb, bending, stooping or squatting; considerable walking may be involved.
Special Requirements:
Definition of Medical Staff Services office: primarily accountable for the administrative and credentialing compliance structure of the medical staff organization. Intermediate Typist Clerk duties include processing paperwork, initial credentialing, re‑credentialing, and ensuring accurate database updates.
Available Shift Applicants may be required to work any shift, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
