Summary
– Performs specialized medical tissue testing and administrative tasks in support of clinical activities. Work involves preparation of tissue samples that allow pathologists to determine cause of death, disease, and treatment options.
Responsibilities :
Investigates problems with equipment, test results, specimens, or workflow.
Participates on teams or performs special projects/assignments.
Performs quality control and equipment maintenance.
Performs routine and specialized test procedures, preparing tissue slides by processing, embedding, sectioning, examining, and staining tissues from surgical pathology, autopsy, hematology, cytology, and research areas.
Teaches Clinical Laboratory Science students, Pathology residents, and trains new employees; serves as a technical resource.
Prepares specimens, reagents, solutions, heat, or filters as required.
Provides leadership and guidance to co‑workers.
Reports results to healthcare providers; consults/confers regarding test results.
Reviews test results to ensure accuracy and timely correction of errors.
Education Requirements :
Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Chemistry, or Biological Science.
Licensure/Certification Requirements :
HTL (ASCP) certified by ASCP Board of Certification within two years from hire date.
Professional Experience Requirements :
If bachelor’s degree plus completion of a NAACLS accredited histology program, no years of experience required.
If bachelor’s degree in biological or chemical science, one year of relevant laboratory experience.
