Job Title: Nurse Practitioner – Emergency Medicine Washington University in St. Louis – Barnes-Jewish Hospital emergency department and affiliated community sites (Barnes West County, Missouri Baptist Emergency Departments). 40 hours per week, day, night, and weekend shifts.

Position Summary The Emergency Medicine Nurse Practitioner will provide direct patient care under physician support 24/7, collaborate with emergency physicians for complex cases, and maintain accurate medical records.

The role offers clinical experience in both academic and community settings with a variable work schedule.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Obtain patient history, perform examinations, develop diagnostic plans, interpret results, and provide treatment for acute and chronic conditions.

Implement patient‑centered care plans in collaboration with patients, consultants, nurses, and ancillary providers.

Manage health conditions via prescriptive authority or referrals consistent with certification and state regulations.

Bill for services covered by a collaborative practice agreement.

Provide counseling and education regarding preventive health, treatment options, and community resources.

Monitor and ensure accuracy of patient medical records; maintain required reports and statistics.

Maintain a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic environment for patients and families.

Follow departmental policies, quality assurance programs, and safety, environmental, and infection control standards.

Participate in continuous quality improvement and process improvement activities.

Engage in professional development through educational programs, literature, in‑service meetings, and workshops.

Working Conditions

Normal office and patient‑care setting, exposure to blood‑borne pathogens and chemicals.

Typical duties include sitting, standing, walking, bending, and occasional lifting (≤25 lbs).

Requires protective devices and may involve use of clinical equipment.

Education & Licensure

M.S.N. – Master of Science in Nursing (Nurse Practitioner) required.

APN licensure in Illinois and/or Missouri; ability to obtain licensure within three months of hire.

Certifications & Licenses

American Heart Association – Basic Life Support (BLS).

American Red Cross – Basic Life Support (BLS).

Certified Nurse Practitioner – Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.

Certified Nurse Practitioner – Missouri Division of Professional Registration.

Salary Range Base pay commensurate with experience. Salary range reflects base salaries for the S30 grade across the University.
