Mental Health Direct Support Professional

About the role Provides support for individuals and/or groups of persons with disabilities and challenging behavior in a community and/or residential setting. Assists the person(s) receiving services in identifying and communicating requests and needs for services and supports. Implements services to address the person’s goals and desired outcomes as identified through each person’s Centered Plan. Relies on direction and supervision to accomplish the job. Works as part of a team collaborating on integrated care, treatment, collaborative contacts, after‑hour contacts, and emergency team meetings.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience; OR Associate’s degree with three years of experience; OR High School diploma or GED with five years of experience working with individuals with mental health and developmental disabilities (preferred). These requirements may be reduced based on specific service line requirements.
Able to support persons with behavioral challenges and implement effective crisis management protocols.
High School Diploma or G.E.D.
At least 18 years of age
Valid driver’s license
Essential Job Related Responsibilities
Assists with employee health and safety – follows company policy, maintains auto insurance, reports incidents.
Assists with person‑centered coaching – supports development of healthy habits, assists with appointments and community access, provides training on daily living skills, and teaches medication administration.
Assists with person supported community life – transports people to programs, work sites, appointments, and community activities.
Assists with quality management performance – provides daily living support, crisis response, and respects rights and dignity.
Provides support to team members and supervisors – collaborates with professionals, asks for help, attends meetings, documents shift changes.
Assists with person‑centered plan and outcomes – helps identify supports, encourages choice, and works toward plan goals.
Assists with medical requests – supports medication management and records dosages.
Assists with data collection and reporting – logs incidents, program data, monitors health and wellness.
Pre‑employment Screening
Complete criminal background check, name checks in registries, drug testing, education verification, proof of employment history or references.
Positions requiring driving – proof of driver’s license, insurance, and vehicle (if applicable).
