Key Responsibilities Works under the direction of the physician and the Arizona State Nurse Practice Act to provide nursing care to patients in compliance with nursing standards and regulations. Utilizes the nursing process to make continuing assessments and implement interventions based on assessment data, developing and delivering care plans and evaluating patient responses. Provides excellent patient care with compassion, tact, cheerfulness, accuracy, patience, flexibility in scheduling, calmness in emergency, and teamwork. Assists with orientation of new staff as requested.

Quality of Care and Nursing Process

The nurse provides evidence-based care to prevent the development of a Healthcare Acquired Condition and hospital readmissions.

The nurse practices standard precautions during patient contact and while handling contaminated materials.

The nurse complies with CDC hand hygiene guidelines and works to reduce hospital acquired infections.

Assessment

Nursing assessments are completed according to hospital and unit specific policies, procedures, and standards of nursing care.

Collects pertinent data from the patient, significant others, and healthcare providers.

A comprehensive patient history and physical is completed in a timely manner, including biophysical, psychosocial, environmental, self-care abilities, educational, age specific, cultural, and discharge planning needs.

Diagnosis / Care Needs

Nursing diagnoses / care needs are derived from the assessment data.

Involving the patient and significant other as appropriate, the nurse formulates a plan to provide appropriate care based on identified patient needs.

Implementation

Provides nursing care based on identified nursing diagnoses / care needs.

Aligns nursing care with standards of patient care and utilizes interdisciplinary therapies.

Prioritizes care based on assessment of the patient’s immediate condition or needs.

Involves the patient and significant others as appropriate in care planning.

Collaborates with patient, family, physician, and other clinical disciplines for decisions related to nursing care.

Implements patient education and involves family or significant others as appropriate.

Evaluation

Evaluates the patient’s progress toward desired outcomes based on ongoing assessment data.

Revises nursing diagnoses / care needs based on reassessment data.

Documentation

Completes nursing admission and assessment form with all blanks filled.

Initiates the Nursing Care Plan with identified patient problems considering age specific variations, diagnosis, expected outcomes, and interventions.

Records patient’s response to hospitalization, treatments, and nursing interventions.

Documents medications, treatments, and interventions on appropriate chart forms.

Provides thorough discharge instructions and sends patient home with a discharge folder.

Patient Satisfaction Regularly updates patient communication boards, performs bedside shift reports, conducts hourly rounds, and applies AIDET and other evidence-based behaviors. Unit goal for Patient Satisfaction is met.

Qualifications Education:

Associate Degree in Nursing or graduate of a Nursing Diploma program.

Certification / Licensure

Current, valid Arizona RN license or compact state RN license.

Current BLS certification from American Heart Association or American Red Cross.

Unit Specific Requirements Medical Surgical Units:

Basic EKG competency within 3 months of hire.

De-escalation Techniques course within 6 months of hire and every 2 years thereafter.

Pediatrics:

PALS certification required within 6 months of hire.

De-escalation Techniques course within 6 months of hire and every 2 years thereafter.

Intensive Care Unit:

ACLS certification required upon hire.

Basic EKG competency within 30 days of hire.

Progressive Care Unit:

ACLS certification required within 3 months of hire.

Basic EKG competency within 3 months of hire.

De-escalation Techniques course within 6 months of hire and every 2 years thereafter.

Women’s Services:

NRP certification required within 6 months of hire/transfer.

Emergency Department:

ACLS and PALS certification required within 3 months of hire.

De-escalation Techniques course required within 3 months of hire.

Emergency Severity Index (ESI) training required within 6 months of hire.

TNCC required within 24 months of hire.

Hemodialysis:

ACLS certification required.

Basic ECG competency within 3 months of hire.

Clinical Decision Unit:

Basic EKG competency within 3 months of hire.

ECHO:

ACLS certification required.

Basic ECG competency within 30 days of hire.

Surgical Services/Circulator:

ACLS certification required.

Basic EKG competency within 30 days of hire.

Surgical Services/PACU/Outpatient:

ACLS and PALS certification required within 30 days of hire.

Basic EKG competency within 30 days of hire.

Cath Lab:

ACLS required upon hire.

ECG competency upon hire.

Minimum of 2 years’ experience as a Registered Nurse.

Cardiology:

Basic EKG competency within 30 days of hire.

Preferences Education:

Bachelor’s in nursing.

Experience:

Experience working in respective clinical area is desired.

Unit Specific Preferences Medical Surgical Units:

Certified Medical-Surgical Nurse encouraged.

ACLS certification preferred.

Pediatrics:

One-year acute pediatric experience.

Certified Pediatric Nurse encouraged.

Intensive Care Unit / Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit:

Certified Critical Care Nurse encouraged.

Cardiac Medicine Certified and/or Cardiac Surgery Certification encouraged for CVICU.

One-year PCU experience preferred.

Progressive Care Unit:

Two years acute care experience.

Progressive Care Certified Nurse encouraged.

Women’s Services:

ACLS required during orientation to C-Section recovery role.

S.T.A.B.L.E. class to be completed during orientation to Nursery.

AWHONN Fetal Monitoring Course: Basic course during orientation to labor, intermediate between 6–12 months after orientation, two years of recent labor, delivery, post-partum, and newborn experience.

Inpatient Obstetrical Nursing Certification encouraged.

Lactation Nursing Certification encouraged.

Emergency Department:

One-year Acute Med/Surg nursing.

CCRN or CEN encouraged.

Acute Rehab:

One year Rehabilitation experience.

Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurse encouraged.

FIMS certification encouraged.

Hemodialysis:

One year of Hemodialysis experience preferred or one year of Critical Care experience.

Certified Dialysis Nurse encouraged.

Clinical Decision Unit:

ACLS certification encouraged.

ECHO:

Two years acute care experience encouraged.

Surgical Services/Circulator:

CNOR encouraged.

Surgical Services/PACU/Outpatient:

CPAN and CAPA encouraged.

Cath Lab:

One-year CCU, ICU or ED experience preferred.

Category I: Expected duties have routine potential for exposure to blood, body fluids or tissues. Other potential hazards include exposure to chemical, biological, and radioactive substances; possible exposure to hostile individuals.

Able to handle multiple priorities simultaneously.

Able to assist with the movement of an adult patient weighing up to 300 lbs.

Able to care for patients with infectious diseases.

Must distinguish appropriate colors.
