Base pay range $77,236.00/yr - $100,402.00/yr

Summary The Registered Respiratory Therapist is responsible for providing basic & advanced Respiratory services to Adults/Geriatric Patients – and, if necessary, the basic treatment of all age groups. The therapist plans, implements, and evaluates the effectiveness of Respiratory care procedures and must be able to operate a variety of equipment including mechanical ventilators, continuous positive pressure devices, pulmonary function, arterial blood gas equipment, and oxygen monitors/analyzers.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

English Language Proficiency: Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. 7403(f).

Education: Individuals must have successfully completed a respiratory care program accredited by the CoARC or its successor.

Licensure: Must possess a full, current and unrestricted state license to practice as an RRT.

Credential: Must possess a valid, current, unrestricted credential of RRT.

Grade Determinations: GS‑11 Registered Respiratory Therapist: Candidates must have one year of creditable experience equivalent to the GS‑09 grade level demonstrating the clinical competencies at that level.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Ability to collaborate with physicians and other healthcare professionals; evaluate therapeutic modalities; advanced airway and ventilation management.

Physical Requirements: Standing, walking, lifting patients, transporting equipment; ergonomic dexterity required.

Work Environment: Exposure to infectious diseases, chemicals, and other health risks requiring special precautions.

Duties

Open Continuous Announcement to establish a standing register of qualified candidates to refer as vacancies occur.

The RRT uses accepted measuring/monitoring tools for determining plan of care.

Place nasal and oropharyngeal airway and perform suctioning.

Obtain, analyze, and report arterial and venous blood gas samples.

Perform duties in critical area with close supervision (in‑line suctioning, repositioning, securing endotracheal tubes, bag‑valve mask ventilation, assist in patient transport, ventilator assessment).

Provide outpatient services such as positive airway pressure therapy, oxygen therapy, and COPD care.

Communicate changes in the respiratory care plan or patient status to other health care team members.

Make recommendations to providers regarding treatment changes based on observations and diagnostic values.

Provide effective education to patients, families, students, and staff.

Perform fundamental and advanced diagnostic procedures.

Perform emergency and acute respiratory care procedures per department guidelines and industry standards.

Participate in departmental quality assurance and organizational performance improvement.

Comply with medical center policies and safety procedures.

Maintain clinical and professional competency.

Assemble, check, and correct malfunctions and perform quality controls on respiratory equipment.

Participate in in‑service education and maintain relationships with other disciplines and students.

Work with independence in performing duties.

Collect, review, and evaluate clinical data to ensure appropriate care.

Perform both basic and complex therapeutic procedures for adults and geriatric patients.

Monitor patients on mechanical ventilation, assist with bronchoscopy, interpret arterial gas values.

Apply clinical expertise to upgrade patient care and assist provider in planning.

Work Schedule: 24/7 operations; primarily evenings and nights; available for weekends and holidays.

Overtime and rotating shifts may be required.
