Virginia Treatment Center for Children (VTCC)
VTCC is an inpatient child and adolescent psychiatric unit that provides 24‑hour, non‑coercive care for children and adolescents ages 3‑17 with mental health needs. Nurses work within an interdisciplinary team to improve the experiences of children and families through shared governance and a healing model of conceptualization and care.
Position Overview The Clinical Nurse I, II, and III positions integrate technical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet the needs of patients and families. Each level supports prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort while delivering accurate documentation of direct, age‑specific care based on medical orders and a multidisciplinary plan of care. Nurses administer prescribed medications safely, identify incompatibilities, and mobilize resources to meet individualized patient and family needs.
Responsibilities
Provide prevention of illness and injury and maintenance of wellness for children and adolescents.
Deliver and accurately document direct, age‑specific care based on medical orders.
Administer prescribed medications safely, identify incompatibilities and/or interactions.
Recognize changes in patient situations and intervene appropriately.
Provide direction, education, and assume leadership responsibilities at the unit level.
Serve as a role model and educate others in a clinical setting.
Qualifications
Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible compact state.
AHA BLS HCP certification or equivalent.
Clinical experience: 12‑24 months RN experience (Clin II) or 3 years of clinical experience (Clin III); no specific experience required for Clin I.
Diploma, Associate’s Degree, or Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from a professional program recognized or approved by the Board of Nursing.
Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (or higher) and certification in a specialty area preferred for Clin III.
Enrolment in an approved RN to BSN program within two years of start date for RNs without a Bachelor’s degree.
Participation in a clinical health care environment preferred for Clin II and Clin III.
Additional Requirements
Work all three shifts, weekends and holidays.
Physical: Lifting 20‑50 lbs.; exposure to potentially hazardous substances.
Activities: prolonged standing, sitting, bending, walking, climbing steps, reaching overhead.
