UI Health Care Department of Nursing is seeking a 75% - 100% Staff Nurse to work in the Surgery Specialty Clinic.

Position Summary:

The Surgery Specialty Clinic is home to the Emergency General Surgery Clinic. The EGS clinic sees patients for evaluation of hernias, gallbladder, lipomas, and follow up trauma care. There are two minor Rooms for specialized procedures to be done under local anesthetic.

The Surgery Specialty Clinic care team includes doctors, nurse practitioners, physician assistant, registered nurses, licensed practical nurse, medical assistants, and physicians in training. The team works together to provide a multidisciplinary and holistic approach to best serve the patient and the family. The Surgery Specialty Clinic Team provides an enjoyable atmosphere for staff that includes ongoing professional growth and development.

Duties to include:

Applies nursing theory to the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and evaluation of patient responses to health and illness.

Telephone triage- asking questions to gauge the patient's condition and recommend the best course of action. This could mean advising the caller to seek emergency care, treat their condition at home, or make an appointment to see a provider.

Assesses patient health care preferences and expectations- Provide education to patients preparing for tests, pre-operative information, and reviewing medications

Collaboratively coordinates the continuum of care across settings. Assist with coordinating clinic and radiology appointments at UI Health Care and locally as appropriate.

Develops patient care plan based on patient condition, age, and psychological, educational, and socioeconomic conditions that prescribes interventions to attain expected outcomes.

Implements patient care plan according to patient priorities, which includes interventions identified through nursing diagnoses. Documents/reports interventions and patient/family response.

Collaborates and integrates contributions of patients and families into multidisciplinary patient care plan. Work with the patient and family to ensure patient needs are met following procedures/surgeries.

Implements nursing interventions according to department, division, and/or unit policies, procedures, and protocols to maintain safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff. Follows universal precautions.

Review the patient’s medical record(s) to provide accurate information related to their concern and reason for seeing the physician. Review previous testing done and obtain records and images related to clinic visit.

Percent of Time:

75% - 100% (30 - 40 hours/week)

Salary:

$61,183 minimum at 100% effort to commensurate. Salary will be based on years of experience and percent effort.

Schedule:

100% effort : Monday through Friday, 0730-1600, 0800-1630, and 0830-1700 OR 4 10-hour shifts; 0700-1730. No weekends, no holidays, and no call.

75% effort:

3 10-hour shifts |

80% effort:

4 8- hour days

Education

An Associate’s Degree in Nursing, a Diploma in Nursing, a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing, Professional Masters of Nursing and Healthcare Practice (MNHP), MSN/Clinical Nurse Leader or a Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN, MA) is required.

Required Qualifications

Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.

Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills with patients/families, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary team members as demonstrated through written and verbal interactions.

General computer skills are required.

Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required by date of hire.

Desired Qualifications

Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing or Masters Degree in Nursing is highly desired.

If Baccalaureate degree in Nursing is not yet obtained, active enrollment in a BSN program is desirable.
