Position:
Nursing Professional Development Practitioner
The Nursing Professional Development (NPD) Practitioner utilizes professional judgment and expertise to enhance the role competence and growth of learners across various settings, supporting the IU Health Way. Key responsibilities include onboarding and orientation, competency management, education, role development, collaborative partnerships, and inquiry. This role often functions at the unit or facility level, partnering with leaders and stakeholders to achieve strategic goals and initiatives.

Position Overview As a Nursing Professional Development Practitioner at IU Health Bedford Hospital, we serve as a bridge between education and practice – helping nurses grow, adapt, and deliver exceptional patient care. We design and facilitate evidence-based learning experiences, support onboarding and competency development, and empower nurses to reach their professional goals. This role ensures our nursing team stays current, confident, and connected to IU Health’s mission of improving the health of our patients and community through excellence, compassion, and lifelong learning.

Key Responsibilities
Lead onboarding and orientation programs for new staff and learners.
Manage and assess competency development and maintenance for clinical staff.
Design, implement, and evaluate educational programs and role development initiatives.
Build collaborative partnerships with unit leaders, educators, and stakeholders to support organizational goals.
Facilitate inquiry and evidence-based practice to promote continuous improvement.
Support system-wide and unit-specific educational strategies to meet evolving patient care needs.

Qualifications & Requirements Education:
Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) required.
Graduate from a nationally accredited nursing program.
Licensure:
Active RN license in Indiana or Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC).
Certifications:
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) required.
Additional advanced life support certifications may be required depending on unit or specialty.
Experience:
Two years of nursing experience preferred.
Knowledge & Skills:
Demonstrates knowledge of adult learning principles and techniques.
Ability and willingness to travel as needed to support educational needs across the system.
Strong leadership, collaboration, and communication skills.
Emotional Intelligence – understanding and managing one’s own emotions while empathizing with others; vital for mentoring and coaching.
Communication – clear, compassionate, and professional communication with staff, leaders, and interdisciplinary teams.
Active Listening – Truly hearing concerns and feedback from nurses to tailor education and support.
Collaboration – Working seamlessly with unit leaders, educators, and clinical teams to align goals and initiatives.
Conflict Resolution – Navigating differences and fostering a positive learning environment during change or stress.
