Job Summary Responsible for implementing and supervising nursing services in the medical and surgical care and gives direction to unit assistants on shift. Implements nursing care in a fast‑paced environment primarily with observation status patients and overnight post‑op patient stays. Treats actual or potential health problems using the nursing diagnosis and maintains the plan of care. Teaches, counsels and provides supportive care to the patient and their significant others.

Essential Functions

Provides safe and appropriate nursing care to patients utilizing the nursing process

Performs a thorough and timely assessment of patient’s condition including physical, psychological, social and rehabilitative aspects

Identifies problems/nursing needs including discharge needs

Intervenes appropriately to address identified problems and needs. Plans care according to standards of care. Manages time efficiently/sets priorities appropriately

Evaluates effectiveness of care and revises plan if necessary

Provides education consistent with the patient/family learning abilities and preferences; evaluates outcomes

Effectively communicates with physicians, co‑workers, patients, families

Reports pertinent observations regarding patients to physicians and other health‑care team members

Shift report is given on time, accurately and concisely

Documentation on the patient’s medical record is accurate, complete and concise

Maintains National Patient Safety Goals and other patient safety practices

Verifies, coordinates and carries out physicians’ orders accurately

Coordinates interdepartmental transfers and activities smoothly and efficiently to ensure timely care

Communicates and coordinates with case manager to ensure timely discharge, patient satisfaction and quality care along the continuum of care

Practices Universal Standard Precautions

Demonstrates knowledge of department safety procedures, including safe handling of equipment and hazardous substances

Initiates incident reports appropriately

Administers medications in an accurate and timely manner, following the 5 “rights” and using two patient identifiers before administration

Other duties as requested or required

Performs other duties in a timely and thorough manner

Minimum Education and Certifications Graduate of an accredited program in nursing. Current Registered Nurse license to practice in the state of NJ. Certifications required: BLS (American Heart Association), ACLS – Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support preferred.

Minimum Work Experience One‑to‑two years of experience preferred.

Working Conditions Exposed to unpleasant odors, body waste, communicable diseases. Encounters stress, crisis, emergencies, trauma and death. On feet most of the day, lifts patients and moves heavy equipment. Interacts with family, visitor health team members and other hospital and referral agency personnel.
