Pay Range Base pay: $52,414.00/yr – $92,615.00/yr (actual pay based on skills and experience).
Summary Function as a role model, exhibiting personal recovery competency and coping skills, assisting Veterans to advocate for themselves and providing peer support services in outpatient, inpatient, and community settings. Promote self‑determination and empowerment through recovery‑based principles.
Qualifications Applicant must meet all eligibility requirements by the closing date of this announcement (01/02/2026). Time‑in‑grade for current federal employees is required as described.
Veteran status – active service member who was discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable.
Recovery experience – at least 1 year of recovery from a mental health condition or substance use disorder.
Peer Specialist certification by a recognized non‑profit or state‑approved program.
English language proficiency – basic written and spoken English.

Basic Requirements
Recovery status and certification as per statutory requirements.
At least 1 year of relevant recovery experience (maintenance of healthy lifestyle, independent living, community engagement).
Ability to maintain relationships, volunteer or employ part‑time, and provide support to others.
DOE: DD‑214 and Peer Specialist certification must be provided with application.
Position open to eligible veterans, VEOA, 30% DAV, disability program participants, and eligible current VA employees.
Minimum Grade Level Qualifications
GS‑6: 1 year of specialized experience at GS‑5. Experience includes counseling peers in recovery, advocacy, and therapy aide roles.
GS‑7: 1 year at GS‑6 with similar responsibilities and increased independence.
GS‑8: 1 year at GS‑7 demonstrating ability to work with detailed instructions and perform routine duties with minimal supervision.
GS‑9: 1 year at GS‑8 with independent decision‑making and responsibility for interdisciplinary recommendations.

Duties
Participate in VA health care services training and consultation as a multidisciplinary team member.
Model coping techniques and recovery tools using personal recovery experiences.
Advocate for effective wellness and holistic services, assisting Veterans with daily living.
Orient new Veterans to program services, schedules, and staff.
Guide Veterans to set and pursue personal recovery and wellness goals through group or individual meetings.
Monitor progress, report to treatment team, and assist with discharge planning.
Document concerns and behavior indicators, reporting to the treatment team.
Teach Veterans to combat negative self‑talk and overcome fears.
Maintain knowledge of holistic wellness trends via literature review.
Perform related duties as assigned.
Required technical proficiency: use of VA virtual health applications and smartphones.
Schedule: Monday‑Friday, 08:00‑16:30; telework not available.
