Division of Youth Services - Campus at Mount View About the Division of Youth Services:

The Division of Youth Services (DYS) provides a continuum of residential and non‑residential services that encompass juvenile detention, commitment, and parole. DYS operates fifteen secure facilities that serve youth aged 10 to 21 who are pre‑adjudicated, sentenced, or committed. The Division also contracts with private service providers throughout the State and administers juvenile parole services statewide. For more information, visit

Summary of the Position This role functions as a mental‑health counselor, providing mental‑health and case‑management services to committed and detained youth in the Division of Youth Services. Services include clinical assessment, monitoring medication, individual, group, family, and milieu therapies, suicide risk assessment, report writing, and coordination with a multidisciplinary team.

Job Duties Provide Treatment

Maintain a caseload and conduct individual, group, and family therapy using evidence‑based treatment theories for adolescents.

Apply developmental, cultural, and neurological understanding to interventions.

Document and assess intervention effectiveness.

Collaborate with medical staff on psychotropic medication evaluation.

Coordinate with educational/vocational systems to ensure academic services.

Seek additional resources to optimize treatment based on developmental and neurocognitive ability.

Use a strength‑based, holistic approach to therapy.

Engage family/caregivers in stabilization and transition planning.

Document all case management and therapeutic services in the Fusion Electronic Health Record system.

Follow the Sanctuary/ROCK program and facilitate Community Review Teams when needed.

Assessment and Treatment Planning

Address mental‑health and other needs identified, considering length of stay.

Interpret assessment data and develop therapeutic rapport.

Engage parents/family and other stakeholders for collateral information.

Monitor for serious mental illness, decompensation, or improvement.

Conduct brief mental‑health status exams as required.

Offer ongoing suicide risk assessments and development of alternate interventions.

Coordinate transition planning and refer to psychiatrists as needed.

Determine strengths‑based treatment goals and objectives.

Training and Consultation

Maintain knowledge of federal confidentiality regulations and Colorado alcohol and drug abuse rules.

Stay current on emerging research for juvenile mental‑health, substance abuse, and co‑occurring disorders.

Train colleagues in evidence‑based treatment delivery.

Participate in orientation, workshops, discipline meetings, and trainings.

Model interventions and recommend staff assignments.

Assist in case reviews, group placement, and case consultation.

Maintain professional certifications and licensure.

Engage in professional development, continual training, research, and CEU’s.

Provide input on milieu programming and treatment goal implementation.

Documentation and Communication

Document treatment notes for all individual and group sessions in DAP format.

Tailor group documentation to each youth’s participation.

Select appropriate information for each record and designate recipient parties.

Communicate findings in the most effective mode.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

License and Experience:

Current, valid Colorado or state participating in the Social Work Licensure Compact licensure as a:

Licensed Social Worker (LSW) OR

Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) OR

Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) OR

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT)

Licensed Addiction Counselor (LAC)

AND

One (1) year of experience with current, valid licensure from a state participating in the Compact, based on work assigned to the position.

Preferred Qualifications:

Relatable experience as a current or previous State of Colorado employee.

Conditions of Employment:

Minimum age 21 years with no felony convictions or history of domestic violence.

Full background check and reference check required.

State of Colorado residency required at the time of application and throughout employment.

Valid, non‑restricted Colorado Driver’s License or non‑restricted U.S. Driver’s License if within 30 miles of the state border.

Completion of DYS Pre‑service Training Academy, Field Training Program, and mandatory annual training.

Participation in the Diana Screen sexual‑risk screening.

Former state employees who were terminated or resigned must disclose details and provide employee number.
