Regional Safety Manager- Generation (Houston/Pittsburgh) Job Summary/Purpose All members of NRG’s safety function will be expected to own safety, work to prevent incidents and seek to improve with the understanding that zero harm is possible. The Regional Safety Manager will be responsible for providing support to assigned plants within their region in addition to developing, deploying, managing, and improving assigned safety and occupational health programs. The Regional Safety Manager will also be responsible for supporting the development of safety specialists and safety committees within their assigned region. There will be regular opportunities to demonstrate skills in change management, contract management and communications. This position will also be required to present to leadership the health of the program for which they are responsible, communicate any deficiencies identified and develop sustainable solutions to prevent future issues. It will be expected that the Regional Safety Manager engages with their peers to support their growth and build bench strength within the safety function.
Job Duties/Responsibilities
Partner with plant leadership and plant safety professionals to develop, implement, and maintain safety programs and promote a safety over production culture
Conduct regular safety audits, inspections and risk assessments. Provide recommendations and strategic support to mitigate or eliminate workplace hazards.
Monitor and evaluate changes in applicable Occupational Safety and Health regulations, applicable consensus standards, standard interpretation Letters and industry best practices to ensure policies, procedures and work practices remain current
Serve as a change agent to achieve a zero-injury safety culture within the region
Support and encourage the growth and development of safety professionals across the organization through coaching and mentorship.
Liaise with and support business unit safety and operational leadership to lead and influence continuous improvement across NRG.
Manage the implementation, maintenance, validation and revision of assigned safety and occupational health management system components.
Assist with the development and delivery of safety training
Support incident investigations as well as corrective action development and action closure
Engage with and support plant safety committees and the Fleet Safety Steering Committee
Develop safety flashes, operating experience bulletins, vendor business cases, and recordability determination reports
Manage applicable processes, platforms, resources and contracts associated with assigned safety programs.
Lead and/or participate in internal and external special project teams with the purpose of continuous improvement.
Provide support of various Industrial Hygiene programs and processes
Engage, develop, and maintain relationships with external partners, organizations, and memberships.
Working Conditions
Work overtime and non-standard working hours as directed
Ability to work 75% of time at plants within assigned territory/region
Possess a valid Driver's License at all times
Requires wearing personal protective safety equipment
May entail lifting ( MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Minimum Education:
Bachelor’s Required or equivalent work experience
Minimum Experience:
7+ years industry/safety experience with at least 4 years of power plant experience
Minimum knowledge, skills and abilities
Strong understanding of safety regulations in the Electric Power Generation industry
Ability to effectively coach and mentor.
Thorough understanding of applicable OSHA regulations and industry guidelines.
Experience working within safety and occupational health management systems.
Experience with change management and project management.
Ability to observe and engage effectively with employees and contract partners.
Investigation/RCA with tools such as TapRoot, Cause Mapping, Fishbone, Five whys, etc.
Skilled in analyzing and interpreting data to identify trends utilizing tools such as Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerBI, SAS, etc.
Demonstrative knowledge of AI tools and applications relevant to the role.
Ability to manage multiple activities and changing priorities.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Excellent organizational skills.
Ability to work irregular hours and out of town assignments as required.
Ability to learn region-specific bargaining unit agreements
