Assistant Director of Student Ministry, Asbury United Methodist Church (Birmingham, AL)
12/19/2025
If you love Jesus, genuinely enjoy teenagers, and think middle schoolers are equal parts hilarious and holy chaos, this role might be your sweet spot.
Asbury United Methodist Church is a vibrant, mission-driven church in Birmingham, Alabama, and we are hiring an Assistant Director of Student Ministry to help lead and grow RESET Student Ministry. This is a relational, hands‑on ministry role for someone who wants to build community, disciple students, and help shape a culture where teenagers are known, loved, challenged, and pointed to Jesus in real ways.
This is not a “sit at a desk and send emails about pizza” job. This is a show up, jump in, build trust, create moments, and do meaningful ministry with students and families kind of job.
What you will do You will serve alongside our Director of Student Ministry and help lead day-to-day ministry with a strong focus on middle school, while supporting the full student ministry (middle and high school). Responsibilities include:
Help lead weekly student gatherings that students actually want to attend
Build real relationships with students and families, beyond Sunday morning
Teach and disciple students through Scripture-centered, relevant ministry
Recruit, train, and develop volunteers into confident, healthy leaders
Help plan and execute retreats, camps, mission trips, and special events
Create a welcoming, fun, safe environment where students can grow in faith
Bring ideas, energy, and initiative to help RESET keep moving forward
Who we are looking for We are looking for someone who is mature in faith, relationally strong, and ready to lead. You might be a great fit if you are:
Passionate about Jesus and helping students follow Him
Energized by middle school and high school ministry, especially middle school
A clear communicator who connects with students and adults
Flexible, steady under pressure, and able to pivot when plans change
Team-oriented, but also self-starting and dependable
Organized enough to manage details, and warm enough to build trust
Available for evenings and weekends, plus camps, retreats, and key events
Preferred, not required: a degree in a related field and or experience in student ministry, education, coaching, or similar work.
Compensation and benefits Salary: Mid $40k, with room to grow
Full health and dental coverage at no cost to the employee, affordable family options available
Retirement contributions after six months
Supportive church staff and a student ministry team that genuinely enjoys serving together
A healthy rhythm in a church that values community, growth, and sustainability
Why Asbury Asbury UMC is a strong, mission-centered congregation that cares deeply about the next generation. RESET Student Ministry is energetic, relational, creative, and rooted in Scripture. We work hard, have fun, and take discipleship seriously. If you are looking for a place to grow as a leader and make a real difference in students’ lives, you will find that here.
