Calendar 10 month position following the North Colonie School District Calendar. Cover all twelve schools in the North Colonie School District Borders.
Position Overview The ten Month District-Wide School Nurse is responsible for providing comprehensive health services to students within the school district. This role encompasses promoting health education, preventing illness and injury, and ensuring that students have access to appropriate healthcare resources. The School Nurse collaborates with educators, administrators, parents, and healthcare professionals to optimize the health and well-being of students, thereby supporting academic success.
Key Responsibilities
Healthcare Services:
Assess the health needs of students and provide appropriate interventions. Administer medications and treatments as prescribed by healthcare providers. Monitor and manage students with chronic health conditions, ensuring they have access to necessary accommodations and support. Provide first aid and emergency care as needed, including responding to medical emergencies within the school setting.
Health Education:
Develop and implement health education programs to promote healthy behaviors and lifestyles among students. Conduct presentations and workshops on topics such as nutrition, hygiene, sexual health, and substance abuse prevention. Collaborate with teachers to integrate health education into the curriculum and classroom activities.
Preventive Health Services:
Conduct screenings for vision, hearing, and other health issues as required by state regulations. Immunization tracking and compliance monitoring to ensure students are up-to-date with vaccinations. Promote and facilitate access to preventive healthcare services such as annual physical exams and dental check-ups.
Health Promotion and Advocacy:
Advocate for policies and practices that promote a healthy school environment, including nutrition guidelines, physical activity initiatives, and mental health support. Collaborate with school administrators to address health-related concerns and implement strategies for improvement. Serve as a resource for parents and guardians regarding health-related issues affecting their children.
Documentation and Record-Keeping:
Maintain accurate and confidential health records for all students, including medical histories, immunization records, and treatment plans. Document health assessments, interventions, and communications with students, parents, and healthcare providers. Ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations governing student health records and confidentiality.
Qualifications
Registered Nurse (RN) license
Previous experience in pediatric or school nursing is highly desirable.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, including students, parents, educators, and healthcare professionals.
Knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and best practices related to school health services.
Working Conditions Work primarily takes place within the school setting, with travel to off-site locations for field trips or other private buildings. Physical demands include the ability to stand, walk, and lift/move equipment or students as needed.
