A Brief Overview

Administers respiratory care and life support to patients with deficiencies and abnormalities of cardiopulmonary system, under supervision of Physician and by prescription, by performing the following duties.

Education Qualifications* High School Diploma / GED Required* Associate's Degree Graduate of Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) program PreferredSkills and Abilities* Ability to read and interpret documents. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively to customers or employees of organization. (Required proficiency)* Ability to calculate respiratory-related formulas as necessary for patient care. (Required proficiency)* Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. (Required proficiency)Licenses and Certifications* Respiratory Therapist - KSBHA Must also be Licensed as a Respiratory Therapist by Kansas State Board of Healing Arts. New Graduates with a temporary license issued by the KSBHA are allowed 90 days from date of graduation to successfully obtain CRT credentialing by the NBRC. Required* Certified Respiratory Therapist - NBRC Credentialed as CRT by the NBRC. New graduates are allowed 90 days from graduation to obtain successfully obtain CRT credentials from the NBRC Required* Basic Life Support - BLS Required within 90 days of hire. Required* NRP - Neonatal Resuscitation within 90 days of hire. Required* ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support PreferredWhat you will do* Reads prescription, and reviews patient information to assess patient condition and determine requirements for treatment such as type and duration of therapy, and medication and dosages.* Determines most suitable method of administering inhalants, precautions to be observed, and modifications which may be needed that will be compatible with Physician’s orders. Consults with Physician in event of adverse reactions.* Sets up and operates devices such as mechanical ventilators, therapeutic gas administration apparatus, environmental control systems, and aerosol generators.* Operates equipment to ensure specified parameters of treatment such as volume, gas concentration, humidity, and temperature, and to administer medicinal gases and aerosol drugs to patients. Observes equipment function and adjusts equipment to obtain optimum results to therapy. Inspects and tests respiratory therapy equipment to ensure equipment is functioning safely and efficiently. Reports improper working equipment.* Monitors patient’s physiological responses to therapy such as vital signs, arterial blood gases, and blood chemistry changes.* Performs bronchopulmonary drainage and assists patient in performing breathing exercises.* Performs basic life support measures.* Maintains patient’s chart that contains pertinent identification and therapy information. Records accurate patient charges.* Demonstrates respiratory care procedures to orientees.
