Position Title: Clinical Instructor – School of Health Professions (Department of Health Information Management)
Department SHP Health Information Management (HIM)
Job Description Summary The Instructor in the Department of Health Information Management (HIM) teaches online and in‑person courses and reports to the HIM Chair in the KU School of Health Professions. The role focuses on teaching and maintaining accreditation compliance for the Master of Science and Graduate Certificate in Health Informatics programs, with some undergraduate teaching required. Responsibilities include departmental, school, university, and industry service; participation in student recruitment and outreach; and teaching subjects such as applied statistics, research methods, and health informatics, as well as guiding student scholarly projects. Course assignments vary by departmental needs. This non‑tenure position's rank and salary depend on the candidate's education and experience.
Responsibilities
Teach undergraduate and graduate courses – develop, revise, and teach in person and online health informatics courses, supplementing course delivery with timely insight into industry expectations, practices, and norms.
Set up courses in learning management systems in accordance with HIM departmental standards.
Conduct consistent assessment of learning and use tools such as rubrics for objective scoring. Evaluate according to the criteria outlined in the course syllabi, and grading must align with established policies.
Support students and refer them to appropriate resources.
Coordinate curriculum with adjunct faculty – partner with adjunct faculty and the department chair to ensure sections of courses taught by adjuncts adhere to and remain in compliance with accreditation requirements.
Ensure courses are updated within learning management systems in accordance with HIM departmental standards.
Communicate with all stakeholders.
Participate in committee work or special projects in the Department of HIM, KU School of Health Professions, University of Kansas Medical Center, and/or the industry, as determined by the Department Chair.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a related discipline such as health informatics, data analytics, health information management, or similar.
7 years of experience in healthcare working in health informatics capacities and/or higher education work settings.
Experience using various technologies including health information systems (e.g., electronic health records, clinical information systems, clinical decision‑support systems, or similar) and work with health data.
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree in a related discipline such as health informatics, data analytics, health information management, or similar.
Higher education experience, including on‑campus and online teaching as well as participating in curriculum development.
Experience with online course technologies such as learning management systems and lecture capture systems.
Evidence of previous scholarship such as article publication and/or research.
Professional service to the health informatics profession via service to professional associations such as AMIA, HIMSS, AHIMA, etc. as evidenced by the application materials.
