Description Job Summary:

The Outpatient RN will perform in a variety of care areas including Pre-Op, Procedure, and PACU. This role involves preparing patients for procedures, assisting during procedures, and monitoring recovery to ensure safe discharge. The Outpatient RN needs to be adaptable, proficient in patient assessment, and committed to delivering high-quality, patient-centered care in a fast-paced environment.

Essential Job Functions:

Advocate for patients’ rights, preferences, and needs, ensuring that they receive high-quality, compassionate care that is tailored to their individual circumstances.

Project a professional demeanor and appearance while maintaining the confidentiality of the patient, coworkers, and the organization, as appropriate.

Assess patient health problems and needs to develop, implement, and evaluate care in collaboration with the healthcare team.

Provide direct patient care, including administering medications and treatments as prescribed.

Educate patients and their families on health conditions, medications, treatment care, and post-surgical care.

Inventory all patient belongings preoperatively.

Operate and monitor medical equipment relevant to patient care.

Ensure infection control protocols and safety standards are followed in all aspects of patient care.

Promptly record all care information concisely, accurately, and completely.

Respond to emergency situations using appropriate interventions.

Promptly report and document any occurrences of unusual events, safety concerns, or incidents in accordance with organization policies and procedures.

Plan and direct all nursing care for patients undergoing operative and other invasive procedures.

Provide pre-operative patient education, including pre- and post-surgical instructions, procedure expectations, and recovery guidelines.

Obtain pertinent patient records prior to the patient’s arrival for pre‑op testing.

Prepare patients for outpatient surgical procedures, including appropriate testing, IV insertion, lab draws, vital signs, and pre‑op medications.

Report abnormal values to anesthesia provider and surgeon in a timely manner.

Perform a surgical site identification and verify consent on every patient.

Ensure compliance with Universal Protocol by initiating a pre‑procedural “Time Out” to prevent wrong‑site, wrong‑procedure, and wrong‑patient errors.

Assist with minor surgical or procedural tasks as needed, ensuring aseptic technique and proper equipment usage.

Assist in positioning and responding to the comfort and safety of the patient.

Monitor patient status throughout the outpatient procedural process, identifying and reporting changes in condition to the surgical team.

Support anesthesia recovery by monitoring airway, consciousness level, vital signs, and pain levels in the PACU.

Document all assessments, interventions, and patient responses accurately in the EMR.

Review postoperative instructions and prescriptions from the surgeon with the patient and significant others and document the patient record.

Determine that the patient and significant others understand the conditions that require immediate care and the method to obtain immediate care.

Use the organization’s secure messaging platform in accordance with departmental protocols, including timely receipt and responses to communications.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

Medical Terminology

Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems

Quality assurance and accreditation standards

Understanding of HIPAA regulations, patient confidentiality laws and patient rights

Effective English communication in verbal and written format

Competent in conscious sedation according to policy

Quality work including attention to detail and accuracy

Carry out organization customer service standards

Basic computer proficiency

Capacity to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team

Qualifications:

Demonstrates eligibility for employment in the U.S.

Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) from an accredited nursing program required

Current RN licensure in the State of Wisconsin

BLS certification required upon hire

Must achieve ACLS and PALS certification within six months of hire

Previous perioperative or general nursing experience is preferred

Must possess a cell phone that interfaces with the organization’s secure messaging system
