Registered Nurse (RN) - 6W SICU Duke University Health System

is recruiting a registered nurse for the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (Unit 6W) located in Durham, NC. The position is full‑time, 36 hours per week, with three rotating 12‑hour shifts.

Responsibilities

Plan, provide, supervise, and document professional nursing care for patients in ICU, adhering to physician orders and established policies.

Delegate tasks and supervise activities of other licensed and unlicensed care providers.

Assist other nursing personnel and act as charge nurse for a group of patients or an entire unit as assigned.

Monitor the environment of care, including equipment and material resources, and initiate corrective action as needed.

Participate in ongoing professional development and maintain required competencies.

Act as preceptor and support development of other staff and formal learners.

Identify clinical or operational performance improvement opportunities and participate in improvement activities.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Qualifications

Education : Graduation from an accredited BSN program is required. If not holding a bachelor's, enrollment in an appropriate BSN program within two years of hire and completion within seven years is required.

Experience : Minimum of twelve months of appropriate clinical experience. Exceptional performers with 6 months of experience may be eligible for promotion to CN II within 12 months of hire.

Licensure : Current RN licensure in North Carolina (compact RN licensure acceptable). Basic Life Support (BLS) required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities : Knowledge of nursing scope and process; ability to assess and plan for acute and chronically ill patients; proficiency in communication, documentation, teaching, and use of computer software; proficiency in BLS and specialized life support as required; ability to perform physical tasks such as standing, walking, and handling patient care equipment.

Pre‑employment physical capacity testing required.
