Summary Conduct routine procedures and tests using radiology equipment to acquire patient diagnostic data. Prepare for and assist the radiologist in completion of intricate radiographic procedures, including preparation and administration of contrast media and medications in accordance with state and federal regulations. Perform patient assessments, provide patient care, evaluate the appropriateness of examinations, and assess the quality of radiographic images.

Responsibilities

Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of all aspects of General Diagnostic Radiology, be familiar with and adhere to Departmental Protocols and UNC Healthcare System policies, obtain RT(R) credentials and maintain active status using technical knowledge and ability to assist in troubleshooting work‑unit equipment and protocol issues.

Ensure that patient demographics, emulsion markers, and requested examinations are correct; critique, orient, and save all pertinent images; transmit QA‑ed images to PACS; ensure all images reach PACS; document completion or cancellation of all procedures in RIS; document comments when appropriate; maintain image‑management equipment; report any equipment problem to appropriate resources; and utilize PACS and HIS systems for obtaining additional study data.

Conduct routine procedures and tests using radiology equipment to acquire patient diagnostic data.

Perform work timely, produce quality radiographic images consistently, analyze requests and draw appropriate conclusions for examinations, review orders and images while correlating patient demographics, ensure information accuracy, review daily schedules and patient status, maintain a clean and safe work environment, document incidents, and advise supervisors of improvement opportunities.

Use RIS, CIS, PACS, and SMS effectively and appropriately to access information, document status, modify orders for appropriateness, complete exams in the RIS system, QC and transmit information to PACS, and verify proper arrival of all data.

Verify patient identity, obtain patient history relevant to the examination order, verify pregnancy status before administering ionizing radiation, assess patients’ physical condition, develop an action plan, determine if additional medical personnel or equipment is needed, assist patients requiring extra attention, react to emergency situations, and ensure patient safety.

Education Requirements

Associate’s degree or completion of an accredited Radiologic Sciences Program. If the degree is not yet complete, candidates may be selected contingent upon completing the degree within 90 days of hire.

Licensure/Certification Requirements

Registered by the American Registry of Radiological Sciences or registry eligible and become registered within one year from date of hire. Registry‑eligible candidates must provide a copy of a diploma from an accredited program and must maintain registry status and continuing education requirements annually.

Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification.

Professional Experience Requirements

No prior experience required.

Knowledge/Skills and Abilities Requirements

Knowledge of radiation protection and safety in addition to general and electrical safety, infection control, TB, and standard precautions.
