Position Details

Type: Part-time Temporary, Non-Exempt

Work schedule: 12 hours per week, varies by department needs

Pay range: $16.31 - $20.77 per hour, based on experience

Benefits: Partial benefits

Position Summary The PT laboratory technician will work with other part‑time and full‑time lab techs under the direction of the Chair of the MFAB department. Responsibilities include preparing materials, maintaining equipment, and ordering supplies to create a safe, organized environment and allow night instructors to focus more on students. This is one of two PT lab technicians.

Required Qualifications

Familiarity with welding and fabricating equipment.

Understanding of and ability to follow safety requirements.

Able to perform basic maintenance, shop upkeep, and metal preparation under minimal supervision.

Able to organize tasks and materials to meet the needs of MFAB faculty and classes.

Job Duties

Mechanically prepare welding materials using metal shears and thermal cutting processes to meet AWS certification specifications.

Operate forklift to unload materials from trucks.

Troubleshoot errors and malfunctions; coordinate and perform equipment service, repair, or replacement as needed.

Fabricate fixtures and jigs using precision and accuracy.

Ensure welding materials and personal protective equipment are stocked and available for lab and class schedules; set up the lab and prep areas for scheduled classes.

Take inventory of welding materials and equipment; order and restock supplies; maintain positive vendor relationships.

Research invoice and contractual issues and resolve discrepancies.

Enforce and promote safety protocols and guidelines, including proper use of safety equipment.

Maintain a safe, efficient, and clean welding work area; organize materials and keep equipment cleaned per established protocols.

Assist teachers with welding instructional needs; fulfill ad‑hoc and last‑minute requests; communicate with instructors regarding supplies and equipment.

Provide welding guidance and direction to students; assist with questions and concerns; monitor conditions and enforce policies and standards.

Conduct safety inspections and maintain departmental compliance with local, state, and federal safety regulations and JCCC policies.

Duties and responsibilities may be added, deleted, or changed; scheduling and work location may also change.
