Job Summary / Responsibilities Under general supervision and following established procedures, you will receive and prepare surgical and autopsy tissue specimens (including frozen sections and specimens for special study for microscopic and pathological examination). You will receive, log, and perform standard histological procedures (embedding, sectioning, staining, cover slipping, labeling, etc.) on routine surgical and autopsy tissue specimens. You will perform advanced histotechniques in immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy and assist pathologist with gross dissection of tissue specimens, setting up area, instruments, and equipment, and preparing chemical reagents and solutions. You will file and retrieve slides, paraffin blocks, and surgical pathology reports, and prepare and correlate slides and surgical reports for pathologist. You will operate and maintain all laboratory equipment (including performing quality control and preventive maintenance); replenish stock reagents. You will participate in training other laboratory personnel, developing and implementing new procedures and research projects. You will assist pathologist or designate in performance of tasks related to medical photography and perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
High school diploma plus two years histotechnology training, or
Associate of Science degree or equivalent number of college credit hours taken in science plus one year histotechnology training, or
Certificate from an accredited school of histotechnology.
Must be registered as HTL (Histotechnologist), HT (Histotechnician), or registry eligible through the ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathologists).
Facility Description DMC University Laboratories (DMCUL) is a regional, integrated laboratory system providing services to the eight hospitals of Detroit Medical Center. Established in 1993, it comprises Core Laboratories, Specialty Laboratories, two rapid response hospital laboratories, a Centralized Stat Lab, Centralized Blood Bank Lab, and full‑service outreach infrastructure. The test menu includes over 1,000 tests, with less than 1% sent to outside reference laboratories. DMCUL provides reference laboratory services to other healthcare systems in southeastern Michigan and out‑of‑state facilities.
