Summary The Community Health Services Division within Public Health Seattle and King County is seeking a skilled and enthusiastic Nutrition Assistant (WIC) to join our Kent Public Health Center team. The Nutrition Assistant provides services to participants in the Women, Infants & Children (WIC) Program, including assessing eligibility, providing nutrition education to individuals and families—through individual appointments and group sessions—and working with a team of Nutrition Assistants and Registered Dietitians.

Work Schedule Workdays and hours typically are 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, Monday – Friday. Occasional Saturday or evening hours may be required.

Work Location Kent Public Health Center 25742 104th Ave SE, Kent, WA 98030 Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to the worksite.

Job Duties

Gather and assess information for determining health and nutrition risk factors, program eligibility, client education, and referrals.

Provide group and individual nutrition education, including breastfeeding support.

Obtain and document measurements for infants, children, and adults, including blood samples for hemoglobin testing.

Respond to telephone inquiries—screen, schedule, and interview participants to determine appointment type and appropriate provider.

Document participant information and services and manage appointment schedules in electronic records (Cascades) to support the WIC program.

Provide direct customer service to a diverse clientele, explaining WIC benefits and determining appointment types.

Conduct WIC outreach and program tasks such as generating end‑of‑day reports, participant letters, and referrals to other Public Health services.

Participate in WIC‑related committees, including breastfeeding promotion, clinic health and information fairs, and the WIC Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program.

Order and maintain program supplies and educational materials.

Participate in quality assurance activities.

Complete annual WIC trainings and continuing nutrition and breastfeeding education requirements.

Use Microsoft Outlook and other electronic communication tools to coordinate work and meet training requirements.

Ideal Candidate – Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Teams, Word, Excel, Outlook).

Ability to lift and lower a child weighing up to 35 lbs onto a surface more than 4 ft high.

Ability to complete Washington State WIC paraprofessional competencies within 6 months of hire.

Ability to complete agency training and practice requirements for capillary blood draws within 4 months of hire.

Requirement to obtain a Washington State food worker card.

Current BLS for Healthcare Providers with AED certification before hire.

Apply nutrition and health promotion knowledge/practices to clients from diverse backgrounds.

Working knowledge of basic nutrition theory and practice, medical terminology, asepsis practices, and universal precautions.

Demonstrated ability to provide direct client services in a healthcare setting.

Knowledge of basic cooking and food demonstration techniques.

Understanding of various perspectives and listening without judgment.

Excellent problem‑solving, priority setting, and organizational abilities.

Commitment to equity, racial justice principles, and cultural humility.

Desired Candidate

Ability to use a language commonly spoken by WIC participants (e.g., Spanish, Russian, Ukrainian).
