Summary The University of North Carolina Hospital Department of Pharmacy seeks a highly motivated pharmacist to provide patient care to our pediatric population. The pharmacist will work in a multidisciplinary environment, serving services including Hematology/Oncology, Bone Marrow Transplant, Pediatric Intensive Care (Pediatric, Cardiac, and Neonatal), Pulmonary/Cystic Fibrosis, Endocrine, and Cardiology. The position is an evening shift (12 pm‑10 pm), rotating 7‑on‑7‑off, and combines on‑site and remote work. The role includes teaching responsibilities: students from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy and precepting both PGY1 and PGY2 residency residents in pediatrics.
Responsibilities
Ensure timely medication access for service patients; review and verify orders, clarify incomplete, inaccurate, or contraindicated prescriptions with prescribers, nurses, or other health professionals, and intervene on medication‑related problems.
Utilize and analyze patient data to provide optimal drug therapy recommendations; assess patient medication therapy regimens and make appropriate clinical interventions with providers.
Perform protocol‑driven clinical services such as therapeutic dose monitoring, antimicrobial stewardship activities, etc.
Compound and oversee the preparation and dispensing of medications, including sterile products, using standard formulas, processes, and procedures as required.
Maintain patient profiles within the electronic medical record to facilitate communication.
Comply with the medication formulary, therapeutic substitution, and other programs designed to optimize drug therapy while minimizing cost.
Facilitate discharge and transfer of patients, including medication reconciliation and discharge counseling.
Practice medication safety, including adverse drug event and medication error reporting.
Participate in Code Blue situations for pediatric patients.
Precept students and residents and participate in training new pharmacy staff as required.
Education Requirements
PharmD or BS in Pharmacy Degree
Licensure/Certification Requirements
Active pharmacist licensure with the NC Board of Pharmacy or obtainable before initiation of employment. Recent graduates of ACPE‑accredited schools may fill this role while pending initial licensure, but must obtain licensure within 6 months of orientation or sooner if required.
