In this role, you’ll work alongside our vital records and vital statistics team, gaining hands‑on experience in building and maintaining Nebraska’s vital statistics data systems. You’ll support the modernization of data workflows, system interoperability, and technical assistance across birth, death, and other vital records. You’ll also contribute to reporting, quality assurance, and the development of analytic tools for public health programs. We’re excited to have you help with training, system integration, and supporting project management activities that strengthen Nebraska’s public health data capacity! Responsibilities

Perform data management, quality checks, and analysis using statistical and informatics tools to support vital statistics reporting and dissemination. Support the development of data pipelines and workflows that make vital records accessible and usable by other public health program areas. Provide technical assistance and training to hospitals, funeral directors, local registrars, and other partners to improve timeliness, completeness, and usability of data. Conduct business analysis of program operations and workflows; assist in identifying gaps, duplications, or risks in the data intake and reporting process. Review and validate datasets to identify errors or reporting failures; develop documentation and workflow diagrams for ongoing system improvements. Contribute to grant writing and reporting, including gathering data, drafting sections of applications and reports, and documenting data management practices. Support development of analytic tools, dashboards, and regular publications that make data more transparent and accessible to policymakers, program staff, and the public. Build and maintain collaborative relationships across state agencies, local health departments, and external partners to strengthen Nebraska’s data ecosystem. Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health, Statistics, Epidemiology, Informatics, or Health field plus 4 years of experience working in data analysis, statistics, & interpretation of data in a health subject area OR Master’s Degree in Public Health, Statistics, Epidemiology, Informatics, or Health field plus 2 years of experience. Experience may be substituted for education on a year for year basis. Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in Public Health, Informatics, Biostatistics, or a closely related field. Experience working with vital records or public health surveillance systems, including data collection, validation, and reporting. Proficiency in SQL, R, Python, or SAS for data management, cleaning, and analysis. Familiarity with data standards such as HL7, FHIR, USCDI, or other public health data exchange protocols. Experience designing or supporting dashboards, data visualizations, or public health reports for non-technical audiences. Demonstrated ability to work across program areas to make data usable for multiple partners. Experience with data quality improvement processes, such as edit checks, workflow documentation, and error resolution. Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to build partnerships with hospitals, local health departments, funeral directors, and other stakeholders. Demonstrated commitment to advancing data accessibility, fairness, and public transparency in health statistics. Knowledge Of

Statistical and public health data principles; vital records workflows (birth, death, fetal death, marriage, divorce). Data management and analysis tools such as SAS, R, Python, SQL. Health data and messaging standards (HL7, FHIR, USCDI). Nebraska statutes and federal regulations governing vital statistics and health data. Surveillance system structures, system interoperability, and privacy/security requirements. Skill In

Data analysis, quality assurance, and basic statistical modeling. Using informatics tools to build usable pipelines for data intake, validation, and reporting. Providing technical training to diverse groups (healthcare staff, IT partners, local officials). Communicating effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Troubleshooting and problem solving in evolving system environments. Ability To

Independently identify issues in data flows or user workflows and recommend solutions. Join/link datasets from multiple systems to produce richer analyses. Build partnerships across program areas to ensure data supports broader public health needs. Contribute to system planning and implementation to strengthen Nebraska’s vital statistics program.
