Department Profile The

7300 Cardiology Stepdown Unit

at Duke University Hospital has 31 beds. The unit provides care for cardiology medicine patients with a range of diagnoses, including acute coronary syndrome, post‑cardiac catheterization, electrophysiology procedures, dysrhythmias, heart failure, heart transplant workups, and congenital heart disease. The environment is fast‑paced and challenging, offering many opportunities for professional growth.

Work Hours & Shifts Full Time: 7 am–7 pm / 7 pm–7 am 12‑hour days and nights rotating shifts. A straight shift option may be available after orientation for experienced nurses based on unit availability.

Job Summary As a Clinical Nurse with Duke University Health System, you will prioritize providing service while caring for the whole person in a patient‑centered atmosphere. The RN is responsible for providing and supervising direct and indirect total nursing care, utilizing the nursing process to achieve goals of the department. You will participate in the clinical ladder program, educational activities, departmental committees, research projects, or other health‑related projects.

Duties and Responsibilities

Plan, provide, and document professional nursing care using the nursing process, in accordance with physician orders and established policies and procedures under the supervision of the team leader or charge nurse.

Delegate tasks and supervise the activities of other licensed and unlicensed care providers.

Assist other healthcare personnel in the delivery of patient care.

Maintain the environment of care, including equipment and material resources; prioritize work organization and identify resources.

Participate in own professional development by maintaining required competencies and pursuing learning opportunities.

Support the development of other staff and formal learners.

Identify clinical or operational performance improvement opportunities and assist in performance improvement activities.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Knowledge, Skills, Education, and Experience Required

Previous work experience (1+ years) as a clinical nurse is required for CNII’s.

Graduation from an accredited Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (or higher), Associate’s Degree in Nursing, or Nursing Diploma program is required.

All registered nurses without a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (or higher) will be required to enroll in an appropriate BSN program within two years of their start date and complete the program within seven years.

Licensure, Certification or Registration Required

Current registration with the North Carolina State Board of Nursing as a registered professional nurse or current compact RN licensure to practice in North Carolina.

BLS (or higher) certification.

Professional specialty certification (preferred).
