position is responsible for the Harmar R&D Lab and supports PMC Plants. The role can establish, plan, and manage projects, and responds to development and technical support activities for marine coatings, floorings coatings, and protective coatings business. Follow PPG’s safety, ethics, and all codes of conduct as outlined in PPG policies. Ensure that the color formulas developed in the laboratory work and are reproducible in the plant, distribution centers, and dealers; support production scale‑up, launch, and maintenance of product lines; and provide manufacturing and field support through problem solving and root cause analysis. Collaborate with internal and external R&D scientists/chemists, plant personnel, marketing, and sales managers. Travel to support other PMC plants in the U.S. (Little Rock, OKC, Kansas City). Provide technical support and troubleshooting for color software applications used in formulation, color matching, and quality control processes. Manage color data systems, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and accessibility of color information across platforms. Collaborate with IT and software vendors to implement updates, upgrades, and integrations of color-related software and hardware tools. Train and assist team members and end‑users in the use of color software and hardware, promoting best practices in color data management. Analyze color data to support product development, quality assurance, and customer specifications, using advanced software tools. Ensure compliance with data security and integrity standards in handling color measurement and formulation data. Manage work independently, work with customers, perform 6S and lab safety upkeep, and develop and support standard processes. Qualifications
BS/MS in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related sciences with a minimum of 5+ years of relevant coatings industry experience. Knowledge of epoxy, polyurethane, polysiloxane, inorganic zinc silicate, water‑based products formulation principles and solvent‑based formulation is necessary. IT skills related to managing and analyzing color data, including database management, data integrity, and integration of color data systems. Ability to search for and interpret literature and be cognizant of competitor technology and intellectual property. Knowledge of design of experiments principles is desired. Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, LFA, LIMS, SAP and Oracle applications. Product launch, plant and field support, and meetings may necessitate some travel and overnight stays. Knowledge in color science (color spaces, color difference equations, etc.) and color measurement instruments is preferred. 3+ years of experience in laboratory work, able to read, understand, modify color formulas, and pass a color blindness test.
