Job Title: Patient Care Technician I
Under the direction of the appropriate licensed clinician, the Patient Care Technician I performs a variety of patient care activities, receiving workplace education and training to assist members of the healthcare team in the care of patients.
Responsibilities
Provide clear, timely communication to the RN regarding observations and changes in patients, such as skin condition, vital signs, and mental status.
Offer constant observation of high‑risk patients as assigned by the Resource Nurse or designee.
Participate in creating and maintaining a safe environment; use de‑escalation interventions and, when necessary, assist with restraints in accordance with training.
Assist patients with daily living activities, including personal hygiene, ambulation, meals, and nourishment.
Help move, lift, position, and transport patients using proper safety techniques and body mechanics.
Maintain patient safety by performing patient safety checks, applying fall‑prevention devices, and following restraint‑policy standards.
Take and record vital signs (temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, pulse oximetry) and measure patient height and weight.
Perform EKGs, point‑of‑care tests, and bladder scans; collect, label, and prepare specimens for laboratory transport.
Conduct unit‑specific procedures such as telemetry battery changes, equipment status checks, cleaning, and proper storage of supplies.
Assist the RN or licensed independent practitioner with treatments and procedures, preparing patients, setting up equipment, and maintaining sterile technique.
Observe, record oral food and fluid intake; refuel tube‑feeding, record outputs, and provide ostomy care as directed.
Show sensitivity and responsiveness to patients’ needs, building rapport and positive relationships.
Communicate respectfully and appropriately with patients, staff, family, visitors, and others.
Replenish patient and unit supplies and equipment as needed.
Request assistance from identified resources when more direction is needed.
Stay current with hospital and unit changes by consulting communication boards, bulletin boards, posted notices, and responding to UMMHC e‑mail regularly.
Possess the ability to precept new Patient Care Technicians.
Standard Staffing Level Responsibilities
Comply with established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.
Attend required meetings, conferences, and seminars.
Demonstrate use of Quality Improvement in daily operations.
Comply with all health and safety regulations and requirements.
Respect diverse views and foster a professional, tolerant, civilized, and accepting environment.
Maintain reliable and predictable attendance.
Perform other related duties as required or directed.
Position Qualifications
Minimum of a high school education or GED.
Current Basic Life Support certification.
Previous patient care experience or clinical care training.
Demonstrated competency at the Patient Care Technician I level, with at least 800 hours and a minimum of 6 months as a PCA I.
Ability to read, write, and communicate in English clearly and concisely.
Knowledge of medical terminology.
Computer skills.
Strong interpersonal skills for gathering information, building relationships, and providing exceptional patient service.
Proven problem‑solving abilities for routine situations.
Calmness under stress or in emergency situations.
Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions Work indoors in a patient care environment requiring hand dexterity, hearing, and vision to respond to patients or providers, adjust equipment, observe, and describe patient observations. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Work is heavily demanding, involving standing, walking most of the time, and frequent pushing heavy equipment or bending.
