Job Description Chronicle Heritage is hiring a Senior Archaeologist to serve as a Principal Investigator for the Mid‑Atlantic region, including North and South Carolina, Virginia, and Maryland. The position is based in Tarboro, North Carolina, with the option of working remotely, depending on the applicant. The successful applicant will work alongside our existing Office Principal, Project Manager, and Senior staff, who are based throughout the Mid‑Atlantic.
Responsibilities and Duties
Lead technical studies and ensure clients receive high‑quality, on‑time deliverables
Provide technical oversight and interdisciplinary team oversight
Provide quality control for all deliverables and ensure compliance with applicable regulations
Train and mentor staff and actively engage in professional development
Interface with clients and external stakeholders
Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of regulations affecting CRM and general industry trends
Oversee field investigations of proposed project sites to assess or evaluate resources or the potential for resources
Direct collection, analysis, and interpretation of data; formulate recommendations and solutions to highly complex problems or those involving risk
Hire Type Full‑time (salaried)
Schedule Monday‑Friday, normal business hours
Location North Carolina, hybrid
Required Qualifications
SOI‑Qualified (advanced degree in archaeology, anthropology, or a closely related field)
Ability to prioritize multiple projects, tasks, and deadlines simultaneously
Experience leading projects in Mid‑Atlantic (North Carolina and Virginia preferred) including 4+ years of experience managing survey, testing, and data recovery projects
Comprehensive understanding of legal framework of CRM with excellent understanding of NRHP criteria and application to the region
Demonstratable report writing experience including technical reports, treatment plans, and comprehensive data recovery reports
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite applications including experience preparing deliverables on schedule using report templates and style guides
Valid driver's license
Preferred Qualifications
Familiarity with GPR, and other remote sensing techniques and Geographic Information Systems
Experience managing a lab including artifact analysis, developing and implementing laboratory policies and procedures, and communicating results and findings to relevant parties
Experience with MDOT, VDOT, or NCDOT contracts and project execution.
