About The Role The Direct Support Professional (DSP) plays a vital role in enhancing the quality of life for individuals with developmental, intellectual, or physical disabilities by providing compassionate and personalized care. This position focuses on supporting individuals in their daily activities, promoting independence, and fostering community integration. The DSP will work closely with clients to assist with personal care, skill development, and social engagement, ensuring their safety and well‑being at all times. This role requires a commitment to respecting the dignity and preferences of each individual while encouraging their growth and self‑advocacy. Ultimately, the DSP contributes to creating a supportive and empowering environment that enables clients to lead fulfilling and meaningful lives.
Job Responsibilities
Assist individuals with activities of daily living including hygiene, meal preparation, medication reminders, and mobility support.
Develop and implement individualized support plans in collaboration with clients, families, and healthcare professionals.
Encourage and facilitate participation in community activities, social events, and skill‑building opportunities.
Monitor and document client progress, behaviors, and any changes in health or well‑being, reporting concerns promptly.
Maintain a safe, clean, and supportive living environment that promotes client independence and comfort.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent.
Ability to pass background checks and any required health screenings.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated compassion and patience in working with individuals with disabilities.
Basic knowledge of first aid and emergency response procedures.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous experience in direct support or caregiving roles.
Certification in CPR and First Aid.
Training or coursework related to developmental disabilities or behavioral health.
Ability to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
Skills Communication skills enable the DSP to understand client needs and collaborate with families and healthcare teams. Patience and problem‑solving skills help manage challenging behaviors and adapt support strategies. Organizational skills are essential for maintaining accurate records and managing schedules. Preferred skills such as CPR certification and experience enhance the DSP’s ability to respond to emergencies and provide higher quality care.
