Responsibilities ICU nurses specialize in treating critically ill patients in general intensive care units, post-op units, burn units, and other specialized, intensive care units. Most Critical Care travel positions are in hospitals, but ICU RNs can choose from many different subspecialties. Some rehabilitation facilities also use critical care nurses because of their skills with ventilators and tracheostomy tubes. An important function of Critical Care nurses is to provide education and support to patients and their families.

Requirements

1+ year of recent experience in this specialty and setting

Valid nursing license as required by this state

Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA)

Valid Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification through AHA recommended and may be required

Specialty-related certifications are preferred and may be required
