At our Diagnostic & Preventative Center in Tucson, AZ, under the leadership of Dr. Karen Herbst, we deliver cutting‑edge, patient‑centered care to individuals navigating the complexities of fat disorders such as Lipedema and Dercum’s Disease.
Position Summary The Roxbury Institute is seeking a compassionate and highly skilled Nurse Practitioner to join our Tucson-based team. This role offers a unique opportunity to provide comprehensive specialty care for patients with fat disorders while collaborating closely with Dr. Herbst and a multidisciplinary clinical and surgical team. The NP will play a vital role in delivering advanced diagnostics, patient education, and holistic treatment plans. This position is ideal for an NP passionate about integrative, preventative medicine and eager to specialize in a rapidly growing, underserved area of healthcare. Occasional travel to see patients at our Utah and California Centers is expected.
Core Responsibilities Patient Care & Clinical Practice
Deliver comprehensive, patient-centered specialty care for individuals with Lipedema, Dercum’s Disease, and other fat disorders.
Conduct thorough assessments, establish accurate diagnoses, and develop individualized, evidence-based conservative treatment plans.
Provide preventative care, chronic disease management, and in-depth patient education tailored to the unique needs of this population.
Respond to patient inquiries and chart messages with timely, supportive communication.
Advanced Diagnostics & Procedures
Utilize an ultrasound machine to evaluate fat tissue.
Interpret bioimpedance spectroscopy scans to assess lymphatic function.
Take and interpret thermography scans to assess for vein disease and other findings that support a diagnosis of a fat disorder.
Identify relevant genetic variants and provide actionable recommendations to patients.
Education and Collaboration
Assist Dr. Herbst in the development of an educational program to raise awareness of lipedema and other fat disorders.
Create curriculum and educational materials for providers and community groups.
Participate in provider outreach initiatives to improve recognition and management of fat disorders.
Participate in quality improvement projects focused on advancing and standardizing clinical protocols for broader implementation.
Qualifications Required
Proficiency or willingness to train in advanced diagnostics and interpretation of testing tools.
Preferred
Active licensure in Utah and/or California to support TRI centers in those states.
Clinical experience or strong interest in co-morbidities such as Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders (HSD), Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes, and Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS).
