Job Summary The Respiratory Therapist – RRT administers pharmacological, diagnostic and therapeutic agents to support respiratory care according to physician orders. Responsibilities include assessment, monitoring, treatment plan implementation, documentation, patient safety and collaboration with the healthcare team. The therapist works under the direction of the ordering physician and organizational policies.
Essential Functions
Administers advanced respiratory treatments and monitors patient responses.
Guides patients through treatment modalities to ensure cooperation and success.
Performs and documents arterial blood gas punctures accurately.
Assists physicians with bedside procedures.
Conducts pulmonary testing procedures as assigned.
Follows protocols and maintains safety and regulatory compliance.
Communicates effectively with peers and healthcare staff.
Maintains respiratory equipment, ensuring proper function and cleanliness.
Implements physician orders in compliance with procedures.
Documents all treatments, assessments, and patient responses clearly.
Uses PPE and identification techniques per infection control standards.
Manages ventilator settings and airway maintenance.
Responds to emergency situations, initiating appropriate interventions.
Tailors oxygen therapy to meet age‑specific needs.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Maintains reliable attendance.
Complies with all policies and standards.
Qualifications
1–3 years of respiratory experience in an acute care setting preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Proficiency in administering respiratory procedures.
Strong communication for interaction with teams, patients, and families.
Skill in patient assessment, ventilator management and airway maintenance.
Competence in using EMR systems.
Understanding of regulatory standards, safety protocols and infection control.
Commitment to continuous professional development and regulatory compliance.
Licenses and Certifications
Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) required.
Basic Life Support (BCLS) within 30 days of hire required.
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required.
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required.
Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) required if working in NICU.
Neonatal Stabilization Certification (STABLE) required if working in NICU.
State Specific Requirements
Georgia: PALS and NRP certifications required. Completion of SAMA course within 30 days of hire required.
