RN-First Assist (H)
Location SSM Health St. Mary's Hospital - Jefferson City
Job Summary Provides direct assistance to surgeons before, during and after surgical procedures.
Responsibilities
Position patient for best exposure, using stabilizing equipment when necessary, maximizing comfort and safety.
Implement physician orders for operative site visualization, including tissue manipulation, retraction, sponging, suctioning and irrigation.
Utilize appropriate technique to achieve temporary and permanent hemostasis.
Assist with body plane closure, application of wound dressings and securing drainage systems.
Apply evidence‑based practice and scientific knowledge to nursing care, ensuring age‑specific and clinical needs are met.
Maintain constant alertness and work safely.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Education
Completion of an RNFA program that meets AORN standards or RNFA education equivalency for Certified RN First Assistant (CRNFA).
Experience
Two years' registered nurse experience in an advanced surgical specialty.
Physical Requirements
Constant speech and oral communication.
Constant standing and walking.
Frequent lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 0‑25 lbs.
Frequent sitting, reaching and keyboard use/data entry.
Frequent use of vision and depth perception for distances near and far, identifying colors.
Frequent use of smell and hearing.
Occasional lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 25‑50 lbs.
Occasional lifting/moving of patients.
Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting, gripping and repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements.
Occasional driving.
Rare crawling and running.
Licenses & Certifications by State
Illinois:
Basic Life Support HealthCare Provider (BLS HCP) – AHA; Registered Professional Nurse (RN) – IDFPR; Certified Perioperative Nurse (CNOR) – CCI.
Missouri:
BLS HCP – AHA; RN issued by Compact State or RMN by Missouri Division; CNOR – CCI.
Oklahoma:
BLS HCP – AHA; RN issued by Compact State or RMN by Oklahoma Board; CNOR – CCI.
Wisconsin:
BLS HCP – AHA; RN issued by Compact State or RMN by Wisconsin DPS; CNOR – CCI.
