Summary Of Work Laboratory Technician

in the Division of Chemistry at the North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality supports accurate, reliable data collection essential to protecting North Dakota's water, land, and public health by coordinating sampling activities, maintaining laboratory readiness, and serving as a key liaison with partner agencies and tribal systems.

In This Role, You Will

Prepare and coordinate sampling kits and support routine and special sampling events for state, federal, municipal, and tribal partners.

Serve as a liaison between the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), tribal drinking water systems, and laboratory staff to support compliance monitoring and special sampling needs.

Support sampling and analysis of fuels and agricultural products to ensure regulatory and label compliance.

Maintain laboratory and warehouse inventory for chemicals, supplies, and large-scale environmental sampling programs.

Monitor laboratory equipment and quality control records, including temperatures, calibrations, and water quality testing.

Provide guidance on proper sampling procedures and handling requirements to field staff and partner agencies.

Serve as a back-up for receiving, logging, tracking, and maintaining chain‑of‑custody for environmental and microbiological samples.

Update standard operating procedures and support continuous improvement of lab processes.

Communicate technical information and procedures to internal and external stakeholders.

Qualifications and Requirements To succeed in this position

you should be highly organized, detail‑oriented, and comfortable working in a laboratory support environment. You should be able to manage multiple priorities, maintain accurate records, and communicate clearly with a wide range of partners. Experience with sampling protocols, inventory management, and environmental or laboratory processes will support your success in this role.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States. DEQ will not provide sponsorships.

A bachelor's degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or closely related field, OR

An associate degree and two years laboratory testing work experience that included performing complex laboratory examinations and analyses.

Staring salary is $4,300/month, depending on experience.
