Gateways Hospital and Mental Health Center
is a non‑profit organization located in Los Angeles that provides comprehensive mental health services for children, adolescents, transitional‑aged youth, and adults. The organization operates a 55‑bed hospital and six outpatient facilities with beds ranging from 14 to 134 and employs approximately 400 staff.
Summary of Position The Registered Nurse is responsible for medical‑related patient care services. They oversee all medication‑related personnel and collaborate with other disciplines and departments to maintain the safety and quality of medical patient care.
Essential Duties
Administers nursing care, medications, injections, treatments, and other procedures to selected clients as authorized by hospital policy, licensure, and standards of practice.
Educates clients on healthy lifestyle choices, diagnoses, medication, actions and reactions, both individually and in group settings.
Schedules and coordinates medical appointments for clients.
Routinely consults with the respective psychiatrists regarding treatment, medications, etc.
Supports the psychiatrist by scheduling weekly appointments, forwarding all necessary documentation (e.g., clinical reports, labs).
Coordinates and performs weekly blood draws for clients.
Orders, receives, reconciles, and delivers medical supplies and medications to ensure prescribed medications and supplies are in stock at all times.
Coordinates with the pharmacy on all medication insurance authorization requests (i.e., TARs) and enrolls clients in patient assistance programs (e.g., Janssen Connect).
Monitors, reconciles, and approves all pharmacy and lab invoicing.
Acts as a liaison with pharmacy and lab personnel.
Participates in treatment team meetings, in‑service training, and other meetings as scheduled.
Observes and promptly reports changes in client’s conditions and behavior to the treatment team.
Assists in personnel actions, such as recruitment, training, evaluations and discipline for indirect reporting personnel.
Provides training to treatment team staff on nursing‑related matters (e.g., orienting staff to medication room procedures).
Completes and maintain all required documentation, including electronic records, in a timely, accurate, and organized manner.
Uses written communication effectively to document in accordance with all regulatory agency and hospital requirements.
Administers and documents all staff and client TB tests, maintains due date log.
Takes the lead in emergent and emergency medical situations (i.e., assesses client, notifies staff administration, police, fire department, ambulance and paramedics, as appropriate).
Ensures emergency transportation is arranged for medical emergencies.
Assists in situational crisis intervention as needed.
Recognizes which tasks are a priority or urgent and proceeds accordingly.
Seeks learning opportunities to gain new knowledge/skills which result in continuous quality improvement.
Seeks appropriate guidance from immediate supervisor to achieve expected outcomes.
Maintains competence in all clinical skills necessary for performance of duties.
Maintains competence in interpersonal skills necessary to direct and supervise ancillary staff.
Demonstrates active listening skills that encourage open communication with staff, clients, and families.
Contributes to a positive therapeutic milieu by action and responsible communication with coworkers, supervisors and administration on any issue of concern relevant to job responsibilities and the agency.
