Physics Lab Technician

General Summary:
The part‑time physics lab technician provides technical support services to faculty and staff who teach physics courses on the Lowell and Bedford campuses. The role maintains a sanitary and efficient laboratory environment to promote student success. Responsibilities include administrative work, inventory management, equipment maintenance, lab setup, and safety compliance.
Duties and Responsibilities
Prepare materials and set up all laboratory experiments and demonstrations accurately and on time.
Dismantle laboratory experiments and demonstrations, check and return equipment to storage promptly.
Maintain the order, cleanliness, and safety of the laboratories and storage facilities.
Initiate orders for new/replacement supplies and equipment with approval of the department chair.
Receive, stock, and process orders and invoicing documentation.
Adjust, maintain, calibrate and perform minor repairs to equipment; report major repair needs or arrange repairs per procedures.
Construct and modify apparatus as required; improve existing experiments and design new equipment as needed.
Install physics lab software, periodically update lab computers, and maintain interfaces, sensors, and probes.
Maintain records for all purchase orders and repair work on equipment.
Manage an inventory of all supplies, materials, and equipment, ensuring availability for laboratory activities.
Provide assistance or instruction to faculty in the use of science equipment.
Enforce safety protocols; conduct the proper disposal of all laboratory waste, including biohazardous material, coordinating with the Environmental Health and Safety Officer.
Perform administrative tasks such as inventory reports, disposal records, service contracts, materials safety data sheets (MSDS), product information, and laboratory manuals.
Coordinate with various agencies/individuals to review work status, exchange information, or resolve problems.
Follow OSHA safety procedures and maintain files of current MSDS sheets.
Collaborate with other science technicians to ensure appropriate disposal of waste.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean of STEM or the Science Department Chair.
Requirements
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
Some experience working in a lab setting.
Additional Information Salary Range:
$24.50 per hour in accordance with the Middlesex Community College Part‑Time Wage Schedule.
Location:
Bedford and Lowell campuses.
Hours:
Up to 18.5 hours per week; schedule to be determined upon hire.
Expected Start Date:
February 2026.
