Summary Registered Nurse position at Cincinnati VA Medical Center. Responsibilities include coordinating patient education, self‑management, and customer satisfaction across the continuum of care; administering medications and procedures; and influencing outcomes via interdisciplinary collaboration.

Qualifications

English Language Proficiency per 38 U.S.C. 7403(f) – proficiency in basic written and spoken English.

Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by an accrediting agency (ACEN or CCNE). If attending a master’s level bridge program, completion of coursework equivalent to a bachelor's in nursing may allow registration before program completion.

Upon state license achievement, temporary appointment possible, later converted to permanent upon graduation from the bridge program (refer VA Handbook 5005 – Appendix G6).

For foreign nursing school graduates: current full, active, unrestricted registration meets requirement for appointment as nurse with associated entry‑level program; higher education requires formal equivalency validation via accepted evaluator such as ICD.

Current full, active, unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth (e.g., Puerto Rico) or District of Columbia.

Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) exception: candidates meeting basic education but lacking licensure may be appointed at entry step with 120‑day temporary appointment while pursuing licensure; may extend up to two years on a case‑by‑case basis.

Grandfathering provision: all persons currently employed in VHA in 0610 series conducting duties per qualification standard on 1/29/2024 are considered compliant for grade held, including education and licensure.

Grade determination criteria include scope, education, and dimension requirements; dimension requirements detailed online assessment (https://apply.usastaffing.gov/ViewQuestionnaire/12853809).

Grade/Level scope education: Nurse I – Level I: fundamental knowledge‑based care; requires ADN or Diploma in Nursing with no extra professional nursing.

Nurse I – Level II: demonstrates integration of biopsychosocial concepts; requires either ADN or Diploma with 1 year of specialized nursing experience equivalent to Nurse I‑Level I or a BSN with no extra experience.

Nurse I – Level III: demonstrates proficiency and goal setting for complex cases; requires either ADN or Diploma with 2 years of professional nursing experience, or BSN with 1 year equivalency, or MSN/BSN with no extra experience, or related master’s with BSN, or Doctoral with no experience.

Nurse II: demonstrates leadership and collaborative strategies; requires BSN with 2 years experience equivalent to Nurse I‑Level III, or MSN with one year specialized experience, or related master’s with BSN and one year special experience, or doctoral with no experience, or doctoral in related field with BSN.

Nurse III: demonstrates leadership and management of complex client care beyond immediate practice; requires MSN with two years specialized experience, or related master’s with BSN and two years, or doctoral nursing with one year specialized experience, or related doctoral with BSN and one year.

Note: Foreign education programs/degrees are not creditable as related degrees.

Duties

Inpatient Staff Nurse: deliver fundamental knowledge‑based care to assigned clients while developing technical skills.

Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care based on age‑specific components.

Coordinate care focused on patient education, self‑management, and customer satisfaction throughout the continuum of care.

Administer medications and procedures per established policies and guidelines.

Influence care outcomes by collaborating with interdisciplinary team.

Responsible and accountable for individual nursing practice and appropriate delegation of tasks.

Promote individual growth and development in practice with increased levels of self‑direction.

Formulate a plan of care based on nursing assessments.

Seek guidance to improve care provided to patients and families.

Delegate elements of care to appropriate team members based on assessed needs, condition, and patient safety.

Apply principles and theory with limited application of critical thinking skills.

Night shift (full‑time – 80 hours per pay period): six 12‑hour shifts (09:30 pm–08:00 am) and one 8‑hour shift (11:30 pm–08:00 am) with rotating weekends and holidays. Telework not available. Relocation/incentives not authorized.
