Introduction Are you passionate about helping young people and making a real impact on your community? The Prince William County Office of Youth Services is seeking a highly motivated individual to serve as a Youth Service Specialist at the Molinari Juvenile Shelter (MJS)—a short‑term residential detention alternative for boys and girls ages 10 to 17 in crisis.

This role is an overnight assignment for the male dorm, housing boys ages 10‑17. For this vacancy, we are seeking qualified male applicants. Female applicants are welcome to future vacancies in the female dorm.

Purpose: Supervise the security and welfare of youth during weekend evenings and overnight limited activities.

What the Job Entails

Maintain direct supervision of residents in the assigned dorm.

Accurately complete all security checks, reports, record in logbook, file reviews, and other required paperwork.

Ensure residents remain in assigned rooms or areas during sleeping hours.

Respond promptly and appropriately to disturbances, medical needs, or behavioral incidents.

Complete incident reports as required for rule violations or emergencies.

Complete shift change reports and brief incoming staff.

Maintain confidentiality and comply with facility standards and compliance standards.

Maintain a clean, safe, and respectful environment.

Perform other duties as assigned by the shift supervisor or Assistant Superintendent.

What You’ll Need To Be Successful Ideally, experience working with at‑risk youth, preferably in a secure or non‑secure residential facility. Ability to work independently, make decisions based on established policies, model positive decision‑making skills, perform physical restraints when necessary using “Handle with Care,” basic computer skills, use handheld radios, and bilingual (English/Spanish) encouraged.

Minimum Education, Required Skills & Experience High school diploma or G.E.D. and one year of experience working and/or volunteering with youth in areas such as youth activities/training, social services, security, military, law enforcement, or detention.

Preferred Skills & Experience

Knowledge of trends and practices for working with at‑risk youth

Experience in secure or non‑secure residential setting

Facilitating psycho‑educational groups

Experience with positive behavioral modification methods, pro‑social engagement, trauma‑informed models, conflict resolution

Experience with physical restraint techniques such as “Handle with Care”

CPR/First Aid Certified

Bilingual (English/Spanish)

Schedule Requirements Part‑time overnight shifts: Friday through Sunday and some Mondays from 10 pm to 8 am.

Special Requirements

Pass local, state, and federal background checks.

Pass a pre‑employment physical/fitness test.

Pass Child Protective Services record check.

Possess a valid driver’s license with a safe driving record.

Pass DMV Record check.

Be able to work any shift and overtime.

Be able to get to work in inclement weather.

Designated mandatory reporter of child abuse.

Complete Handle With Care (HWC) training, CPR & First Aid certification, PREA training within 90 days of employment.

Must not be a current resource/foster parent for a child in the PWC DSS foster care program.

All OYS staff members are required to provide emergency Human Services work in the event of a disaster.

HIRING SALARY RANGE $25.44 – $29.05 per hour.
