Job Duties Consider joining the Virginia Department of Health to serve the public in the Nursing Program at the Roanoke City/Alleghany Health District as a Public Health Nurse I.

Purpose:

Provide independent professional nursing care in clinics, homes, schools and other community settings. Conduct nursing assessments, administer laboratory tests, develop and implement care plans, deliver medication, and manage cases. Participate in public health emergencies and community health assessments. Requires RN licensure and may supervise support staff.

Duties

Use the nursing process to assess, develop/implement care plans, and evaluate outcomes, guided by the Quad Council’s Core Community/Public Health Nursing Competencies.

Assess individuals and families for health status and health literacy, including determinants of health, using multiple data sources.

Apply ethical, legal and policy guidelines in data collection, maintenance, use, and dissemination.

Administer routine child and adult immunizations.

Use data, evidence, and IT to understand determinants of health and their impact.

Work with diverse populations to identify and access community resources through referral and follow‑up.

Provide competent, high‑quality, confidential nursing/case management in clinic, community, home and other settings.

Teach and counsel clients and families on health promotion and disease prevention.

Perform communicable disease investigation, don/doff PPE, support emergency shelters, and other emergency duties.

Special Assignments May be required to perform additional duties as assigned, including assisting the agency or state government during emergencies, adjusting work hours, location, or training. Mobile work may include field and telework. Periodic office attendance for meetings or training may be required.

Qualifications

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Proficient in physical examination, health assessment, interviewing, and counseling.

Can work independently, prioritize, solve problems, adapt to change, and collaborate as a team.

Knowledge of public health concepts, principles of public health nursing, epidemiology, immunizations, nursing science, medical terminology, and case management.

Willingness to travel and work some weekend or evening hours.

Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR.

Additional Considerations

Additional study in health promotion or public health is preferred.

BSN is preferred.

Experience in a public health setting or related to disease prevention and health promotion.
