Overview An established civil engineering consultancy is seeking a Drainage Project Engineer to join its Phoenix, AZ office. This role offers the opportunity to lead drainage‑related tasks on high‑impact transportation and public works projects for state and local municipalities. You’ll work directly with clients, mentor less experienced engineers, and collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams. This is a chance to contribute to innovative, sustainable infrastructure while growing your leadership and technical expertise.

The Role You will be a technical lead for hydrologic and hydraulic design, overseeing everything from storm drain systems and culverts to retention/detention basins and open channel designs. Success in this role means delivering high‑quality, compliant, and cost‑effective designs while supporting business development, ensuring quality control, and fostering a collaborative team culture. The position reports to senior technical leadership and involves close coordination with engineers, project managers, and cross‑office teams.

Responsibilities

Lead drainage engineering tasks, producing designs, reports, specifications, and plans.

Perform advanced hydrologic and hydraulic calculations and prepare final design documentation.

Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and design direction to less experienced staff.

Conduct design and constructability reviews, ensuring compliance with relevant standards.

Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver integrated project solutions.

Support client relationships, marketing efforts, and proposal preparation.

Oversee quality assurance/quality control processes for drainage elements of transportation and public works projects.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering.

2–15 years of relevant experience in drainage design for transportation or public works projects.

Professional Engineer (PE) license in Arizona or California, or ability to obtain via reciprocity within 6 months.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office, MicroStation, OpenRoads, and AutoCAD.

Strong understanding of hydrology/hydraulics software such as HEC‑RAS (1D/2D), FLO‑2D, HY‑8, QGIS, StormCAD, SWMM, or similar.

Strong communication skills, able to work independently and as part of a team.

Demonstrated ability to manage deadlines, maintain quality standards, and solve problems creatively.

Nice to Have

Training or experience in river mechanics, erosion and scour calculations, sediment transport.

Experience with ProjectWise or similar file‑sharing platforms.
