The Protection and Controls Engineering department within the Central Engineering organization is looking for a highly motivated Associate Engineer to join the Protection Support and Analysis section. We seek a candidate who is committed to excellence and understands the importance of personal accountability in making sound business decisions. The ideal candidate will have strong communication skills, technical competence, and the ability to manage multiple assignments with changing priorities. Responsibilities
Provide protection-related support to Operations, ensuring reliable and secure system performance. Analyze relay protection systems, including teleprotection channels, and recommend corrective actions following system events. Perform short-circuit calculations and relay coordination studies to maintain system integrity. Develop clear and comprehensive documentation on relay protection systems for use by operating personnel. Keep supervision informed promptly regarding actual or anticipated issues related to assigned responsibilities. Be available periodically on a 24-hour basis to consult with operating teams on relay protection problems and resolve emergencies. Qualifications
Required Education/Experience
Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering and 2 years of engineering work experience in the application of relay protection systems at either the distribution or transmission level. Relevant Work Experience
Possess strong technical competence, organizational skills, and attention to detail, required. Flexibility to manage multiple assignments with shifting priorities and deadlines, required. Proven analytical abilities, required. High regard for personal accountability and a strong commitment to Engineering Excellence, required. Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with subordinates, colleagues, and various levels of management, required. Computer proficiency including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), required. Protection experience, such as in setting relays, performing coordination, fault studies, developing logic, or using related software, preferred. Familiarity with power system fault analysis, either by hand calculation or software tools, preferred. Familiarity with NERC Reliability Standards (such as PRC-002, 004, 006 etc.), preferred. Licenses and Certifications
Driver’s License Required. Physical Demands
Ability to respond to system emergencies. Able to work in all weather conditions, i.e. excessive heat and/or cold. Ability to work with, and in, the vicinity of high voltage and/or other high-energy systems. Stand, walk, lift, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, and/or reach for the duration of the workday. Ability to travel to company locations to work on storm restoration and heat contingencies. Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses. Additional Physical Demands
The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
