Position Summary
The Senior Transportation Engineer plays a key role in shaping the future of mobility for the communities BENEN serves. In this leadership-driven role, you will guide transportation design projects for local, county, and state agencies – including Caltrans – while advancing the technical excellence and vision of our Transportation Sector.
You will leverage your expertise in roadway and civil engineering to lead multidisciplinary teams from early conceptual planning through final PS&E delivery. Your work will directly influence how people move through their cities, ensuring safer, more efficient, and more resilient transportation networks.
As a Senior Transportation Engineer, you will oversee and produce the core deliverables that define successful projects: geometrics, design calculations, technical reports, drawings, staging concepts, specifications, and construction cost estimates. You will coordinate project teams, mentor junior staff, uphold rigorous quality standards, and collaborate closely with clients and stakeholders to maintain strong partnerships and deliver thoughtful, innovative solutions.

Essential Responsibilities Internal Focus
Provide technical leadership and oversight, design guidance and direction, and quality control for transportation projects
Support the development and refinement of design standards, tools, and templates that elevate team efficiency and consistency
Mentor Designers, Technicians, and Junior Engineers, strengthening the team’s capabilities in design fundamentals, technical decision making, and software proficiency
Project and Staff Focus
Lead elements of roadway and transportation design including geometrics, roadway drainage, signing and striping, traffic handling and staging concepts, and construction cost estimates
Prepare – or direct the preparation of – engineering reports, design calculations, drawings, and technical specifications
Coordinate tasks, workloads, and deadlines to keep multidisciplinary project teams aligned and on schedule
Assist with developing and monitoring project schedules, budgets, and progress metrics to ensure successful project delivery
Provide delegated responsible-charge support, contributing to technical direction and decision-making
External and Client Focus
Participate in client and stakeholder meetings, representing BENEN with professionalism, clarity, and strong technical competence
Support project managers in resolving issues, communicating progress, and maintaining high levels of client satisfaction
Help strengthen relationships building with local and county agencies, Caltrans, and private-sector partners by fostering trust and responsiveness
Business Development Focus
Contribute to proposal narrative writing, scope development, and fee support
Identify opportunities for additional work within existing client accounts and help position the team for future projects
Engage in industry events, conferences, and professional organizations to build the firm’s presence and support strategic growth
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering
Professional Engineer (PE) required
10+ years of progressive experience in transportation and roadway design
Proficient with MicroStation (InRoads / OpenRoads) and/or Civil 3D
Strong communication skills, including the ability to present technical concepts and engage effectively with clients and stakeholders
Compensation Salary commensurate with senior level technical and project leadership responsibilities. Reports to discipline lead. $165,000 - $205,000
