What This Role Is… The Staff Data Engineer is a technical leader responsible for architecting, building, and optimizing CITY Furniture’s enterprise data ecosystem. This role designs scalable data platforms, drives best practices, leads delivery of complex data solutions, and ensures the reliability and quality of data powering analytics, reporting, and data science. Staff Data Engineer requires deep engineering expertise, strong critical thinking, independent problem-solving, and the ability to influence technical direction across the Data Services group. Your contributions will ensure the success of the Technology department at CITY Furniture.
Position Title: Staff Data Engineer
Reports To: Manager, Data Engineering
Location: Hybrid/ Tamarac Corporate office
Department/Sub-Department: Information Technology/ Data and Analytics
Salary: $110,000 - $140,000
What You’ll Do*… As a Staff Data Engineer, your primary responsibilities will be:
Hands-On Engineering:
Build, optimize, and maintain complex ETL/ELT pipelines across cloud and on-prem environments
Develop and maintain data models supporting analytics, operational reporting, and machine learning workflows
Lead root-cause investigations and implement long-term solutions
Implement data quality monitoring, observability practices, and lineage standards
Technical Leadership:
Lead solution design and architecture within your assigned engineering area
Work with other Team Leads to define and maintain engineering standards and best practices
Review technical designs and perform code reviews to ensure high-quality engineering output
Make technical decisions for your workstream while ensuring consistency across the broader engineering function
Team Leadership and Coordination :
Mentor, coach, and develop Data Engineers across various skill levels
Contribute to sprint planning, backlog refinement, and workstream coordination alongside other Team Leads
Manage workload distribution and drive execution within your engineering workstream
Serve as a technical escalation point for engineering challenges
Ensure consistent delivery of scalable, well-documented, production-ready pipelines and data products
Additional duties and responsibilities as a Staff Data Engineer:
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Coordinate engineering direction with other Team Leads to maintain a unified strategy
Collaborate with Data Analytics, Data Science, BI, Product, and business stakeholders to define requirements and solution approaches
Communicate timelines, risks, technical challenges, and architectural decisions clearly
Participate in long-term data platform and infrastructure planning
Adheres to all assigned Standard Work and Role and Responsibilities for your role.

Strategic problem-solving to translate ambiguous requirements into actionable engineering plans.
Advanced troubleshooting and diagnostic capabilities for system reliability and performance.
Influence and collaboration across multiple workstreams to drive engineering direction and alignment.
What’s Required… Education & Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, or related field.
7-10 years of hands-on data engineering experience building complex data systems
Demonstrated success in technical leadership or team leadership roles
Proven ability to deliver production-grade, enterprise-scale data systems
Work Environment & Schedule:
Monday through Friday
Hybrid schedule, corporate office setting
Minimal Travel Required
Physical Requirements:
Prolonged sitting and computer use
Prolonged standing and walking
Technology Requirements:
Proficiency with Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace
Strong knowledge of SQL, Python
Experience with cloud integration, APIs, and data orchestration tools
Advanced optimization and performance tuning
Expert in ETL/ELT frameworks and patterns
Strong Python engineering for pipelines, automation, and APIs
Experience with real-time and batch data processing
Strong data modeling skills (OLTP, OLAP, dimensional design)
Experience with data governance, lineage, cataloging, and observability tools
Proficiency with cloud data platforms and distributed compute
Experience with DB2, Denodo, and data virtualization technologies
Familiarity with orchestration tools (Airflow, dbt) and Git-based development
Experience with REST APIs, CDC technologies, and AWS services (S3, Batch, Lambda, IAM, EC2)
Understanding of BI ecosystems such as Power BI and Cognos
Certifications / Licenses (highly preferred):
AWS Data Engineer / Solutions Architect
IBM DB2 or related certifications
