Exterior Lighting Design and Release Engineer

GM’s Exterior Lighting team is seeking an experienced Design Release Engineer to support exterior lighting system development for EV and ICE vehicle platforms. This role works within cross-functional Product Development Teams (PDTs) to deliver exterior lighting solutions from early feasibility through vehicle integration and launch.
What You’ll Do
Lead exterior lighting design and feasibility activities, including performance requirement definition, packaging integration, and alternative design concepts to support styling themes Collaborate with cross-functional partners (Styling, Electrical, Quality, Purchasing, and Suppliers) to balance design intent, content, requirements, cost, and timing Develop and execute exterior lighting performance requirements based on benchmarking, program priorities, and packaging feasibility Create high-fidelity math data and perform packaging integration using Teamcenter/Unigraphics (NX) Generate lit and unlit exterior lighting feature communication graphics, including animations and vehicle-level communications Conduct competitive benchmarking to support design direction and technical competitiveness Provide technical leadership for advanced component and technology development Make effective engineering decisions with limited data while prioritizing customer needs Perform complex engineering evaluations considering cost, mass, complexity, and timing Lead or support Product Development Team (PDT) activities, including program management of new subsystems Communicate technical information across internal teams and external suppliers through program meetings, peer reviews, and gate reviews Stay current on emerging technologies, regulations, and competitive products Assist or lead development of Statements of Requirements (SOR), Statements of Work (SOW), and Interface Control Documents (ICD) Provide technical contributions at peer reviews and support continuous improvement of development processes What You’ll Need
Bachelor of Science in Engineering or equivalent 5+ years of engineering experience Knowledge of automotive regulations Experience in vehicle integration and evaluating design options using a decision matrix Global product design experience What Will Give You a Competitive Edge
Working knowledge of Abaqus (CAE), Matlab/Simulink (EE controls), and JAVA/Python (software) Experience in vehicle integration and design options, including grille and trim components Experience with Global Exterior Lighting Regulatory Installation Criteria (ELRIC) Experience creating lit mechanizations for day/nighttime electrical architecture reviews Master’s Degree or other advanced degree with emphasis in an automotive engineering discipline
