This is a 2nd shift position located in Groton, CT, as part of D476 Construction Support Engineering. The primary responsibility is proactively supporting COLUMBIA Class construction efforts in the Groton shipyard, providing direct support to shipyard trades and support organizations to ensure safe, efficient, and continuous completion of construction activities in a manner that delivers ships consistent with the design intent.
The Construction Support Engineering team also supports sea trials, interfaces with Operations, Ship’s Management, Planning, Design and Engineering, Supervisor of Shipbuilding (SUPSHIP), and PMS397, acting as the primary engineering interface for the Groton shipyard construction team.
Responsibilities
Provide engineering oversight and assistance to trade personnel
Evaluate emergent shipyard issues that arise during construction and rapidly develop technically acceptable resolutions
Interpret design, drawing, and specification requirements
Provide direction and evaluation to Groton trades via disposition of CNs and TIR UNSATs
Support final assembly, test, certification, and delivery activities for COLUMBIA Class
Provide surveillance of manufacturing, inspection, and testing of material in the Groton shipyard
Lead multidisciplinary engineering evaluations
Facilitate implementation of design lessons, learnings, and process improvements
Facilitate discipline‑specific knowledge transfer to the construction support engineering team
Coordinate engagement of design and engineering SMEs in the construction sequence
Strong interpersonal, organizational and communication skills
Highly motivated with the ability to perform independently
Ability to interact with other groups and organizations in a team environment
Qualifications Required:
Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Structural, Civil, Marine, or Electrical engineering
0-5 years of discipline‑specific (structural, mechanical, piping or electrical) engineering experience
Ability to obtain a DOD Secret security clearance or higher is required
Preferred:
Prior deck plate construction experience is highly desirable
Familiarity with Electronic Desktop (7G, Work Orders, ELCADD, ERS, etc.)
Familiarity with Team Center (CR/CN experience)
Prior U.S. Navy or operations experience
